Connecting Your Computer - Obtaining your Ethernet Address

  • Microsoft Windows 95/98/ME:
    • Start -> Run -> winipcfg -> OK
    • Click on "MORE INFO"
    • Make sure you are looking at the Network card and not the PPP connection information (top drop-down box).
    • Adapter Address: This string of hexadecimal numbers represents the hard-coded identification number assigned to the network adapter when it was manufactured. This is the Ethernet Address that you are looking for.
  • Microsoft Windows NT/2000/XP:
    • Start -> Run -> cmd -> OK
    • In the DOS box type: ipconfig /all
    • Physical Address (Ethernet Address): string of hexadecimal numbers
    • This will only work if the network cable is plugged into a live wall point.
  • MacOS X:
    • Go to the Apple Menu
    • Select "About this Mac"
    • Select "More info"
    • Apple System Profiler will be launched.
    • Under system profile, look for Network Overview
    • Look for "Ethernet Address"
  • MacOS:
    • Go to the Apple Menu
    • Go to Control Panels
    • Open Apple Talk.
    • Go to File
    • Select "Get Info..."
    • Look for "Hardware Address"
  • NB!
    • If you cannot find the Ethernet address after following these instructions, please consult your computer's documentation. It may mean that you have a modem installed instead of an Ethernet Card(Network Card). If this is the case, you will have to purchase an Ethernet Card before you can get connected to the Network.
