Where are all the computers that I can use?
The Computer Centre maintain almost 800 computers across UCC which are accessible to all students in UCC. For full details go to the Student IT Centres section.
Departments such as Computer Science, Business Information Systems, Engineering and others also maintain their own computer labs, bringing the number of student computers on campus to almost 2500.
How do I Log on?
When seated at a computer, press the keys "Ctrl", "Alt" down while pressing the "Delete" key. This brings up the Log on dialogue box. Your username is your Student ID number. Your password can be obtained from the Helpdesk in the Boole Basement on presentation of your Student ID card. The very first time you Log on to a computer, you will be asked to change the randomly generated password that you obtained from the Helpdesk to something that you yourself decide upon.
What do I do if I have a problem?
The staff in the Computer Centre Helpdesk are very approachable, and are there to help you. They will be identifiable by their maroon coloured t-shirts with "Computer Centre" written on them. They may not always know the answer straight away, but will always try to solve the problem.
How can I save my files?
UCC does not currently offer storage to students via the IT centre log-on. You do however have a number of options:
- Use a floppy disk. Most computers on campus have a floppy disk drive. Floppy disks can typically hold 1.44MB of data.
- Use a Zip Disk. Many computers also have a zip disk. Zip disks can typically hold 100MB of data.
- Use a USB Thumb Drive (also known as a Memory Stick). These devices come in various configurations, 8MB, all the way to 1GB
- Email it to yourself. You have 20MB of storage in your email account. Just log on to your account, and attach your file to an email, and address the email to your address.
