Standard for Connecting Equipment to the UCC Network

INTRODUCTION

This document explains some of the conditions relating to the connection of additional equipment to the UCC networks and the display of UCC information.

Arising out of the Acceptable Use Policy, network users (and third parties acting on their behalf) must observe in particular the following rules. This is not an exhaustive list and does not seek to delineate, in any way, the overall requirements of the AUP.

UCC NAMES

Only UCC names (eg for e-mail, Web sites, etc) may be used or advertised.

CONNECTING EQUIPMENT TO THE NETWORK

  1. No device may be connected to the LAN until it is properly configured and operating only with (protocol) addresses which are provided/approved by the Computer Centre.
  2. Any server which offers a remote service (such as FTP or HTTP) must have documented procedures in place that ensure that adequate and timely fixes are applied to deal with security flaws as they arise. This includes up-to-date contact information for the maintainer of the system.
  3. The (production) network must not be used for research in, or testing of, low level networking protocols, software stacks or devices.

APPROVAL AND AUTHORISATION

The following devices require prior approval from, and ongoing access by, the Computer Centre:

  1. Any device which provides infastructural information (eg DHCP, DNS, routing, etc) or which runs network discovery or management routines.
  2. Any device which provides broadcast or multicast services.
  3. Proxy services (for users on the UCC LAN only: proxies for all others are not allowed). There is also a requirement,in the case of abuse/misuse, for the proxy provider to be able to identify the real user.

Any device which extends the LAN, such as hubs, switches or dialup equipment.

There are further provisions set out in Standards for Network Points.
