System and Network Operations

The Systems & Networking Operations Unit is responsible for the monitoring and day-to-day management of the central infrastructure including the campus LAN, HEAnet and Internet links and the central servers within the Computer Centre.

Management and monitoring of the network:

  • Monitoring performance throughout the network
  • Fault-finding, repair and maintenance of the network
  • Participating in the design of the network topology
  • Project management for network implementation projects including the co-ordination of the work of network, maintenance and other contractors
  • Installation of network equipment including the configuring and patching of hubs
  • Activation of network points for users.

Management and monitoring of the central servers:

  •  Monitoring performance on all central servers.
  • Executing operating procedures for central servers
  • Ensuring the integrity of backups on all central servers
  • Allocation and configuration of user resources on central servers.

Defining operating standards:

  • Ensuring that contingency and business continuity plans are in place for all critical systems
  • Maintenance of the network /user-support database
  • Provision of adequate maintenance cover for all IT equipment
  • Ensuring the integrity of all operating documentation
  • Hardware procurement
  • Logistics
