The German Department has been visiting secondary schools to inform prospective students and their teachers of what we do in the German Department, of the programmes and options available to them and to help them in their choice of post leaving certificate study.These visits expressly want to communicate the fact that we value the work of secondary teachers and consider it important to maintain contact with them on a regular basis in order to build a supportive working relationship and actively encouraging the third level study of languages at UCC.
The German Department has visited the following schools since October 2004:

Presentation Boys (Mardyke), Christ King , Scoil Mhuire, Christian Brothers Cork, St. Aloysius Cork, Douglas Community School, Mount Mercy (Model Farm Road).

We have been liaising with the Gesellschaft der Deutschlehrer Irlands (GDI).Many of our staff are on the Goethe Institut Referentenliste , available to give presentations to regional groups of the GDI on topics within their areas of expertise.
Schools Reception and Information session
In November 2005 the four modern language departments at UCC hosted a reception for secondary school pupils and their teachers and parents informing them of study options with languages.It was attended by about 100 people from many different schools in Cork city and county, with interest in all the modern languages.
Schools Language Competition
In November 2005 the German Department, in conjunction with the departments of Spanish, Italian and French, launched our first ever Schools Language Competition.(see leaflet)
