Lewis Glucksman Gallery
The Visual Arts have a lively presence on campus, the most visible sign of which is the new Lewis Glucksman Gallery, located at the University's main entrance on Western Road. The Glucksman is a major new addition to the vibrant cultural life of the Munster region. The landmark building houses four impressive gallery spaces, lecture facilities, a riverside restaurant and shop. The artistic mission of the Glucksman is to explore all aspects of visual culture and present a range of innovative and intellectually stimulating displays. Central to its programme is the creation of discursive relationships between academic disciplines and art practice. As well as providing a dynamic cycle of exhibitions, the Glucksman provides many other opportunities to encounter visual art including practical art workshops, film screenings, seminars, lecture series and gallery tours.
There is also an opportunity for students to get involved directly with the work of the gallery through an
internship programme open to undergraduates of any UCC discipline. The visual arts are not confined to the
Glucksman. The University Art Collection, a considerable collection of modern Irish paintings, sculptures, photographs and prints, is displayed across the grounds and throughout buildings on campus. The Visual Arts Society is an active one, organising exhibitions, lectures and events throughout the year and welcomes all new students to get involved.
The Granary Theatre
The Granary Theatre produces and presents new and experimental work by artists across disciplines. The
programme combines work in theatre, performance, dance, live art, installation, and music, with a lively
critical programme of PERFORUM talks, workshops and artists' presentations. The Granary Theatre is
situated between the academy and th? city; a space of lively criticism/art practice. More than a hundred
undergraduate and postgraduate students in Drama and Theatre Studies study, work and perform in the
Granary Theatre, contributing to debate and practice, and welcoming the perspective of the professional
artist and critic.
The Granary Theatre explores contemporary performance and art practices from a range of thematic, theoretical, historical and pedagogic perspectives, introducing new work by international artists who have not shown before in Ireland, as well as examining historical moments of experimentation. The Granary Theatre seeks to complement existing theatre/arts programmes within the city, and seeks to offer opportunities for Cork-based artists to show work. Granary collaborates with numerous arts and community organisations. It works in partnership with Drama and Theatre Studies at UCC, as well as other universities and colleges.
The Music Department
There is always plenty of public music-making going on at UCC and in Cork city, including many events in
which both students and staff can involve themselves.
The Music Department promotes an annual series of public recitals and concerts on behalf of UCC and as
part of the University's cultural service to the community at large. Known as College Music, the series includes weekly lunchtime recitals on Fridays and weekly lunchtime sessions of Irish traditional music on Wednesdays. These regular events provide a permanent and well-supported platform for visiting and local professional musicians and for performances that involve students and staff of UCC. Several recitals each year are given by the RTE Vanbrugh String Quartet, whose members are artists-in-residence at UCC. The Music series incorporates also a number of evening concerts and other events that involve the University's main performing groups.
