Professor Paul Giller, Registrar and Vice President for Academic Affairs

 Professor Paul Giller was born in London and graduated in Zoology and Comparative Physiology from Queen Mary College, University of London in 1976. He obtained his PhD in Ecology at Imperial College London in 1979. Following a two-year temporary Lectureship back at Queen Mary College, Prof Giller moved to the Department of Zoology, UCC in September 1981, initially to a temporary post, then into a permanent Lectureship in 1983. He was promoted to Senior Lecturer in January 1991 and to Associate Professor in 1995. Prof Giller's research interests lie in ecology, freshwater biology and the role of biodiversity and he has published over 110 papers and articles and 7 books. During his time at UCC, he has spent short sabbaticals working with CSIRO in southern Africa, teaching for a semester at the University of Oklahoma in the USA and as a visiting research Fellow in Lund University, Sweden, and is a visiting Professor at the University of Pau et les Pays de L'Adour in France. Professor Giller has held a number of academic administrative positions at department, faculty and university level. He was Chair of the Academic Council Student Needs and Curriculum Development Committee for four years and then held the post of Executive Dean of Science from September 2000 to April 2005 before being appointed to the post of Registrar and Vice President for Academic Affairs.

The Registrar is responsible to the President for the management of the academic business of the University which involves the planning and development of degree programmes, the recruitment and admission of students, including postgraduate and international students, their examinations and progression and generally all matters relating to students and their studies.  A number of student services also report to the Registrar including Careers, Student Health, Student Counseling and Disability Support. In addition the registrar chairs a wide range of University Committees.
