Undergraduate Studies
The department?s undergraduate teaching is delivered through the Bachelor of Arts (Day and Evening), where sociology is taught at Joint Honours and Single Honours levels, and the Bachelor of Social Science, a degree course for which it shares joint responsibility with the Department of Applied Social Studies. It attracts large numbers of students to both of these programmes. It is additionally involved in a range of business degrees such as the B. Comm, Diploma in Business Studies, Bachelor of Business Studies and in the growing area of Nursing Studies, through its participation in the Diploma in Nursing Studies and the B.Sc. in Nursing Studies. It has also been involved in the MA in Women's Studies and staff members are involved in a range of the courses offered by the Department of Adult and Continuing Education.
The under-graduate programme progresses through a solid and wide-ranging introduction to the discipline (see first year programme) to deeper immersion in theory, research training and substantive knowledge in second and third years (see course outlines). A pivotal part of the programme is the completion of student projects in third year, which generally reveals just how far students have progressed over the lifetime of the programme.
