Sociology graduates are much in demand in the work-place today for their analytical and research skills and their capacity for enlightened judgement. The department of sociology at University College, Cork, offers a complete programme from BA to PhD. It prepares students for a wide range of vocations, offering both general enlightenment and workplace competences. Its intellectual ethos is one of pluralism, tolerance and openness to new perspectives, concerns and issues. It communicates to students the cumulative richness of the discipline while encouraging them to develop their own distinctive perspectives.
It offers specialised area-based courses on Ireland (north and south), Europe and the Developing World.

The department?s staff are internationally reputed in their areas of specialisation and have consistently won major international, national and university research awards. There are currently nine lecturers (see staff page) teaching sociology at both undergraduate (see undergraduate page) and post-graduate levels (see post-graduate page). Other staff are
employed in a part-time lecturing, tutoring, post-doctoral or other research capacity (see research page). The department?s offers an intellectually stimulating and personally supportive environment in which students can progress from their first steps in sociology to an advanced command of the discipline.
