I studied Languages, Economics and Politics at what was then Kingston Polytechnic
for my first degree, including a year at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques at
Bordeaux. I then took a master's degree in Critical Theory at the University
of Nottingham, which I followed up with a PhD thesis on Jean Baudrillard, Georges
Bataille and photography. I came to UCC in October 1996, and have taught courses
on cultural studies (including a Visual Culture course I started in 1997), philosophy,
politics, feminism in France, the Enlightenment, Music and Culture, twentieth-century
art, as well as literary seminars on transgression, the City, writing and sexuality,
Paris. My research and teaching are defined by the analysis and application
of the ideas of 'Theory', as can be seen below.
I am currently working on a book on Georges Bataille, Roger Caillois and the
Philosophy of Science (with Gary Genosko). This research, or at least the initial
work, has been assisted by the Irish Research Council of the Humanities and
Social Science's Project Grant.
I am also working on a book on 'noise music', which will draw together research
I have done over the last few years on noise, ideas of noise, and the place
of noise in music. I am also what is termed a 'practitioner' of noise music
(I wouldn't see myself as a musician, and many would agree
), and have
performed and recorded in two groups: Safe, Working with Children. I have also
had audio and audiovisual installations in group shows.
