Guest Lecture “Volcanism on the Antarctic Plate”

Professor John Gamble of the Department of Geology, UCC gave the Guest Lecture of the Irish Geological Association at the recent Irish Geological Research Meeting. The title of the lecture was “Volcanism on the Antarctic Plate”.

The accompanying photograph was taken from the flanks of Mount Sidley in central Marie Byrd Land, Antarctica looking towards another active volcano Mount Waesche.

Mount Ruapehu, New Zealand’s most active volcano.

Paper published in Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research (v 120, 271 – 287, 2003) dating volcanism on Mount Ruapehu, New Zealand’s most active volcano.The accompanying photograph shows Mount Ruapehu in full eruption in June 1996. This is New Zealand’s largest active volcano. The eruptions in 1995 and 1996 terminated the ski season, and on this occasion (18/6/96), ash fall led to the closure of Auckland International airport 200 km to the north.
