STSM2 Report Gyula Czegeny

Potential of Longer Wavelength UV

Gyula Czégény visited Prof. Åke Strid in Sweden (13 days in May 2012).

Potential of longer wavelength UV to promote the conversion of cellular peroxide to a more oxidizing ROS.

UV radiation may affect plant leaves in many ways: Acute doses evoke oxidative stress, while lower chronic doses trigger acclimative reactions. A detrimental character of reactive oxygen species (ROS) has been shown in the former case but the role of ROS under realistic, near ambient UV conditions remains to be clarified.

The STSM was a starting point of a collaboration between the two participating laboratories and the unique UV laser facility of the host group was utilized in measuring ROS generating efficacies in vitro model experiments as well as in leaves.
