Education makes a fundamentally important contribution to the quality and well-being of Irish Society. Poverty, however, is the single greatest barrier to equality of access and participation in higher education for low income families. It directly affects their capacity to compete effectively in school/state exams, making it difficult for them to secure a place in College. Secondly the cost of maintaining a student in third level education is often too high for low-income families to contemplate it as a realistic option.
