Why Study Politics?

If you are interested in Irish politics, international affairs, human rights, the allocation of power and resources (e.g. health, education, environment), and conflict and cooperation in human societies, then Politics is the subject for you. Politics is an exciting, diverse and dynamic subject that produces highly informed, adaptable and independent-minded graduates.

At UCC we offer a wide and expanding variety of specialisations to students in second and third year. Instruction in diverse skills, principally those associated with History, Government and Philosophy are all part of the programme. Graduates pursue a wide range of challenging and fulfilling careers in broadcasting, journalism, government, law, education, research and business..

Overview

The First Year course introduces students to the nature of politics, the Irish political system, key political concepts, and conflict in international relations.

In Second Year, students choose from a wide range of topics such as Models of Democracy, Political Corruption, War, the European Union, Comparative Politics, US Politics and Ethics, State and Society, Feminist Philosophy, Political Philosophy, Mass Media Philosophy, French and German Political Perspectives and a Simulation Exercise.

In Third Year, students have an opportunity to do an in-depth research dissertation on a special political topic of their choice. Students have an opportunity to choose from a wide range of modules such as Global Governance, Contemporary International Crises, Issues in Irish Politics, Politics of Northern Ireland, Nuclear Politics and Proliferation, Environmental Politics, International Organisations, International Relations, Irish Foreign Policy, Political Morality, Political Philosophy and Political Extremism.
