Gaeilge/Irish
It is recommended that students selecting Gaeilge should have a minimum Grade HC3 in the Leaving Certificate Irish examination, or equivalent.
Why Study Gaeilge/Irish?
A student who chooses Gaelige/Irish as part of his/her Arts degree programme can expect to enjoy a unique cultural enrichment. As well as acquiring the oral and written communications skills which are an essential part of a university language course, the student of Gaelige/Irish develops informed opinions on Irish life and civilisation through an acquaintance with the various sources of information on our heritage and familiarity with Irish literature from early times to the present.
Cúrsai Staidéir
Tá idir theanga agus litríocht i gceist i gcúrsaí na Gaeilge. Is í an Ghaeilge féin an meán teagaisc. Déantar staidéar ar theanga agus ar litríocht na Gaeilge ó thosach aimsire anuas go dtí an lá inniu. Cuireann an dá Roinn na cúrsaí céime ar fáil i bpáirt le chéile: Roinn na Nua-Ghaeilge agus Roinn na Seanagus na Meán-Ghaeilge.
Ancillary Facilities
Ionad na Gaeilge Labhartha, in Áras Uí Rathaille, possesses a fine collection of tapes and videos on Irish matters. The Boole Library, in addition to the Irish books in the Humanities section, holds a special collection of original Irish manuscripts, microfilms and rare books. In-term trips to Dún Chíomháin, UCC’s house near Ballyferriter in the West Kerry Gaeltacht, add a special social and cultural flavour to the students’ academic course. Scholarships are available to students to enable them to spend longer periods in the Gaeltacht during the college holidays. A vibrant Irish-language society, An Chuallacht Ghaelach, organises dramas, debates and various social activities, the annual highlight of which is the weeklong Spraoi Cois Laoi in the first term. As part of UCC’s bilingual policy, officially adopted by Governing Body, a section of Castlewhite Apartments (Brú na Laoi) is reserved for Irish-speaking students who receive an annual scholarship of €500 on fulfillment of the relevant conditions.
Overview
The Departments of Irish are uniquely positioned to provide an insight into the ancestral language, literature and culture of Ireland. For the students it can be a genuinely satisfying encounter: there is the sense of working in an original way with material that closely concerns themselves.
Postgraduate Opportunities in UCC
The Department offers Masters and PhD programmes in Modern Irish. Many students come here from other countries to do postgraduate work, particularly in the area of Early and Medieval Irish. Our postgraduate students have been very successful in obtaining research funding from bodies such as the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences. Similarly, our graduates are well represented on the faculties of other institutions, at home and abroad.
