The course aims to enable each student to build from his or her unique starting point to:
· enhance nursing practice through the develop a professional knowledge base and competence of medication management
· act as a means of professional support and apply expert skills in clinical decision making in relation to prescribing medicinal products
· exercise accountability within the clinical and professional boundaries of the nurse prescribing role
· contribute to the multidisciplinary team in the delivery of quality healthcare for individuals and families across a variety of contexts
· demonstrate a critical understanding of pharmacotherapeutics, pharmacodynamics and pharmacokenetics
· critically examine the professional, ethical and legal contexts of nurse prescribing
The course is modularised consisting of 4 modules totalling 40 credits.
NU5048 – Professional, Ethical, Legal and Communication aspects of nurse prescribing (10 Credits)
NU5049 – Clinical practicum in Nurse/Midwife Prescribing (10 Credits)
GP5000 – Systemic Assessment and Evaluation in Patient Care (10 Credits)
PF5011 – Drug Action and prescribing (10 credits)
Candidates who successfully complete all modules to the value of 40 credits in the PG Certificate in Nursing programme may apply to transfer into the relevant pathway of the MSc in Nursing programme
· Registration as a nurse or midwife on the live register of An Bord Altranais
· Minimum of 3 years post registration clinical experience (the required clinical practice experience must have been gained within the past 5 years with at least one year in the area in which prescribing is proposed and excludes time spent undertaking further post registration programmes)
· Possession of competencies recognised at Level 8 of the NQAI framework
· Demonstration of continuous professional development and ability to study at Level 8
· |Support form employer and completed Site Declaration form, signed by the Director of Nursing
Nomination and confirmation of a designated medical practitioner mentor (completed site declaration form signed by the medical practitioner/mentor) who will provide the student with supervision support and opportunities including shadowing opportunities during the period of the programme
IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL equivalent
Please note that non-EU applicants are not eligible to study part-time programmes
