Overview of End of Life Healthcare Ethics (MSc)

The MSc in End-of-Life Healthcare Ethics is a multidisciplinary programme that is offered on a part-time basis over 2 years beginning in September 2011. It is designed to enable students from diverse backgrounds to research and critically evaluate the ethical, professional, legal and philosophical underpinnings of end-of-life decisions and care in hospital and healthcare settings.

The idea for this ground-breaking and unique programme emerged out of a national project undertaken by University College Cork, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and The Irish Hospice Foundation. That research culminated in the development of an Ethical Framework for End-of-Life Care which is currently being disseminated to Irish hospitals and other healthcare settings. For details see:

Participation

The programme is primarily intended for health professionals (e.g. registered nurses, doctors, consultants, directors of nursing, pharmacists, speech therapists, physiotherapists and occupational therapists); allied professionals (e.g. hospital and nursing home administrators, social workers, chaplains, psychologists, members of clinical and research ethics committees); solicitors; theologians, counsellors; journalists; members of the general public with a keen interest in the subject area.

Exit Awards:

Students who pass taught modules to the value of 30 credits from any combination of the

the 10 credit modules offered in Part 1 may opt to exit the programme and be conferred with

a Postgraduate Certificate in End-of-Life Healthcare Ethics. Students who pass taught modules to the value of 60 credits from any combination of the 5 and 10 credit modules offered in Part 1 and Part 2 may opt to exit the programme and be conferred with a Postgraduate Diploma in End-of-Life Healthcare Ethics.

What will I be Studying?

The MSc programme will normally be undertaken part-time over a two year period. Students complete modules to the value of 90 credits in total comprising 45 credits in Part 1 and 45 credits in Part 2.

In Part 1, students are expected to attend university for lectures, tutorials and seminars for the last Monday and Tuesday of each month (September 2011– May 2012) and for one block week: March 26–30, 2012).

In Part 2, students are expected to attend university for the last Monday and Tuesday of each month (September 2012 – December 2012). On successful completion of a dissertation, to be submitted in July 2012, students will be awarded an MSc in End-of-Life Healthcare Ethics.

Part 1 (year one) of the programme consists of theory modules to the value of 45 credits:

NU6099 Introduction to End-of-Life Decision-making (5 credits)

NU6102 The Ethics of Cure and Care (10 credits)

BH6003 End-of-Life Decision-making and the Role of Legal Rights (10 credits)

NU6114 Philosophical and Empirical Research Methodologies (10 credits)

PH6045 The Philosophy of Death and Dying (10 credits)

Part 2 (year two) of the programme consists of theory modules to the value of 45 credits:

NU6112 Ethical Controversies in End-of-Life Care (10 credits)

NU6101 Ethical Governance (5 credits)

NU6113 Dissertation (30 credits)

Entry Requirements

(a) Prospective students must satisfy the following:

· Students accepted on the course would normally be expected to hold an Honours primary degree (minimum Second Class Honours Grade 1)

– in a relevant subject (e.g. nursing, medicine, pharmacy, clinical therapies, philosophy, law, theology, social sciences)

– in any discipline and either possess a postgraduate qualification in a relevant field or show evidence of at least two years work experience in a relevant field.

· Applicants with a Second Class Honours Grade 2will also be considered on a case by case basis.

(b) Applicants will be judged on academic credentials, previous experience and their Personal Statement.

Note: In exceptional circumstances, applicants without a primary degree may be recommended for entry to the programme after a review of their individual qualifications and experience by the course committee. These applicants may be required to attend an interview and theiradmission will be subject to the approval of the College of Medicine and Health Executive Committee.
