Overview of Advanced Audiology (MSc)

This innovative programme, with opportunities for interdisciplinary learning, aims to enable candidates to expand existing professional knowledge in audiology and to advance their careers through critical reflection on contemporary practice. Accordingly, the programme will educate audiologists and related professionals to a postgraduate level (NFQ level 9); promote commitment to lifelong learning and the principles of client-centred, interdisciplinary and evidence-based audiological practice . This career-enhancing programme does not qualify or license graduates to practice clinical audiology, but is available to audiologists and professions related to audiology. This programmes is being offered with step-on/step-off options, thus enabling prospective students to obtain either a Postgraduate Certificate (PGC), Post Graduate Diploma (PGD), or a Master of Science Degree (MSc).

Individual Modules
As part of UCC's commitment to Continuing Professional Development (CPD), clinicians may take a one-off module and be provided with a relevant transcript of marks. If these students wish to later register within five years for a PGC, PGD or MSc in Advanced Audiology, they will be given exemptions for already completed modules.

Please note that students intending to complete two CPD credits, should instead register for PGC in Advanced Audiology as two CPD credits in Advanced Audiology are equivalent to the PGC in Advanced Audiology).

Flexibility and Exit Awards

Students who pass audiology-specific modules to the value of 30 credits may opt to exit the programme and be conferred with a Postgraduate Certificate in Advanced Audiology.

Similarly, students who pass taught modules offered in the programme, to the value of 60 credits, may opt to exit the programme and be conferred with a Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Audiology.

Attendance and Participation

Candidates will need to attend university for lectures, tutorials and seminars for five contact days per taught module. In most cases, contact days for these modules will be spread out over the semester, as either a single contact day or as two consecutive contact days, occurring respectively on Fridays, or on a Thursday and a Friday. Some modules will involve five consecutive contact days. In addition to contact days (or supervisory contact), candidates will need to engage in independent reading in preparation for contact days and assessments. Candidates may also choose to complete an independent studies module, which does not involve formal taught contact, but does involve supervisory contact.

Induction and Support

Prior to commencing modules, candidates will need to attend an induction to the programme, which will be held when there are new intakes of students. This induction will include an overview of each module and an introduction to the UCC library. The course team will provide support and training on how to search online research databases and candidates will be guided to choose modules which best support their own learning needs at these inductions.

What will I be Studying?

Stages

The MSc is divided into three stages: Part 1: Completion of two 15-credit modules; Part 2: Completion of a further two 15-credit modules; and Part 3: Dissertation to the value of 30 credits. Candidates must complete two core modules as follows (not necessarily in the order presented below):

Dissertation

Prior to commencing the dissertation, candidates must complete all coursework to the value of 60 credits, and which must include CT 6000 (Research Methodology). Students who can evidence a first-class honours pass in the research dissertation component of an undergraduate honours degree may apply for exemption to this rule from the programme co-ordinator.

Types of Learning

Teaching and learning on this course is based on principles of adult learning. Candidates will be facilitated to engage in critical thinking, clinical reasoning, and appraisal of research literature, within the context of lectures, problem-based learning (PBL) tutorials, group discussions, seminars and workshops. Candidates will also identify and discuss challenging cases drawn from clinical practice, and engage in debates informed by analysis of current thinking and research in the field of audiology. Candidates are therefore required to have internet access for online learning.

General Learning Outcomes for the MSc in Advanced Audiology

On successful completion of this programme, students will be able to:

-Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the relationship between audiology theory and practice;

-Discuss and debate contemporary areas of audiology practice at an advanced level;

-Critically appraise the evidence base for a range of audiology assessments, interventions

and managements that promote evidence based care;

-Reflect critically on and challenge their own practice and the practice of others;

-Demonstrate the skills of systematically exploring literature, policy and research effectively using of a range of information sources, including information technology;

-Reflect critically on practice decisions and identify areas for change;

-Apply research methodology by conducting research in an approved area of audiology, under appropriate supervision.

Entry Requirements

Whilst the Postgraduate Programme in Advanced Audiology is targeted at professionals who would be qualified to register as clinical audiologists, other professionals related to the field of audiology such as speech and language therapists, ENT surgeons in training, ENT nurses, teachers of the Deaf, can also enter the programme. However, priority will be given to clinically qualified audiologists. Please note, this programme does not qualify or license graduates to practice clinical audiology.

The following are criteria for entry onto any programme in Postgraduate Studies in Advanced Audiology:

(a) Candidates will be judged on previous practice experience, academic qualifications and a personal statement.

(b) Candidates accepted on the course would normally be expected to either:

(i) hold an undergraduate degree (minimum Second Class Honours Grade 1) in audiology (or related field, e.g. speech and language therapy, medicine, nursing, education of the Deaf); or

(ii) hold a postgraduate degree in audiology (or related field, e.g. speech and language therapy, medicine, nursing, education of the Deaf).

Applicants with second class honours Grade 2 will also be considered on a case-by-case basis.

(c) Candidates must be eligible for registration as a clinical audiologist, or eligible for registration in a profession related to the field of audiology such as speech and language therapy, medicine, nursing or education of the Deaf.

(d) Candidates whose first language is not English must have a minimum of IELTS 6.5 with scores in no individual sections less than 6.0.

(e) In exceptional circumstances, candidates without an honours degree may be recommended for entry to the programme after a review of their qualifications and experience by the programme leader. These candidates may be required to attend an interview and their admission will be subject to the approval of the College of Medicine and Health Executive Committee.
