DClinDent (Oral Surgery)

This is a full-time postgraduate programme, requiring 36 months of study.

The programme has been approved by the Irish Committee for Specialist Training in Dentristry and also meets the educational requirements for the Membership/Fellowship diplomas in Oral Surgery of the Royal Colleges of Surgery in Ireland.  (FFD.OS).

The programme provides a balanced education with a strong emphasis on clinical foundation, didactics and research.  The programme combines relevant basic sciences with clinical Oral Surgery training.  Instruction is presented through lectures, seminars, demonstrations and conferences.  This is supplemented and emphasized by clinical treatment of patients.  Reflection is facilitated on experience and understanding of all aspects of the taught clinical and research components.  The period of instruction will also enchance the analytical skills required for effective, contemporary, Oral Surgical practice.

A student who wishes to proceed to the award of a D.Clin.Dent (Oral Surgery) degree must:

1. pursue a three year, full-time programme from the date of first registration;
2. pass all required modules and;
3. present a thesis on a research project approved by the School of Dentistry.

He/She will be required to complete a three year programme and accumulate 270 credits over the three years.  The candidate's research must be carried out, and the thesis for the degree must be prepard, under the direction of the Supervisor.

Study for the D.Clin.Dent (Oral Surgery) comprises clinical, theoretical and research components.  It is modular in format.

EU Applicants* must:

• Have a primary Dental degree which can be registered with the Irish Dental Council
• Have a minimum of two years postgraduate experience in Dentistry in a range of clinical and educational settings
• Possess a Membership or Fellowship diploma from one of the Royal Colleges.  (MFDS/MFD/FDS/FFD)

Non-EU applicants* must:

• Have a primary Dental degree
• Have a minimum of two years postgraduate experience in Dentistry in a range of clinical and educational settings.  Possession of a Membership diploma from one of the Royal Colleges (MFDS/MFD/FDS/FFD) would be desirable
• Satisfy criteria for English language requirements, as set out by the University in the University Calendar

*Short-listing and appointment of applicants will be based on breadth and depth of relevant experience.  Potential applicants should demonstrate evidence of work experience at a professional level which reflects responsibilities and potential for career development.  Candidates should also have a high degree of computer literacy, excellent inter-personal skills and excellent personal management skills.  They should also demonstrate on-going commitment to personal, professional and career development.  Both academic and professional references conveying suitability for and commitment to completing the programme will be sought.
