Overview of Innovation in European Business (MBS)

This course is offered by three international partners, University College Cork, Cork, Ireland, ISC Paris Business School, France and HU University of Applied Sciences, Utrecht, The Netherlands. Students spend a term in each of the three locations and 6 months in an organisation in Europe.

Business often find that young professionals although possessing substantial management skills and knowledge lack creativity and are not aware of the specific challenges inherent in implementing and managing the cycle of innovation. Furthermore, graduates are often unfamiliar with the requirements of managing dynamic environments. The Masters of Business Studies (MBS) in Innovation in European Business is designed to meet the needs of industry by training graduates to understand the process of innovation and change in an international perspective.

The Masters of Business Studies (MBS) in Innovation in European Business is a 15 month (90 ECTS) taught programme taking place across three locations in Ireland, France and The Netherlands. The programme allows students to develop a valuable combined skill set in business, management and analytical skills and provides them with state-of-the-art knowledge and concepts on how to implement and manage sustainable innovation. This is achieved through a series of modules organised around the innovation cycle in organisations; vision-development-implementation-management and seminars on innovation in Europe. Students learn to focus on business deliverables and business interactions trough an in-company placement and their integrated research project which they have to present as a dissertation.

What will I be Studying?

The MBS IEB consists of 16 taught courses (Parts 1, 2 and 4), an industrial placement (Part 3) and a minor dissertation (also in Part 4), which add up to a total of 90 credits over 15 months.

Part 1

This session takes place in UCC in Cork between September and December (20 credits):
Open innovation and the enabling role of IT (5 credits)
Innovation opportunity recognition and assessment (5 credits)
Venture Capital and Private Equity – Evaluating early stage investments (5 credits)
Leading edge Seminar on Innovating in Europe, Focus on Ireland and Great Britain (5 credits)
Dissertation Preparation I

Part 2

This session takes place in ISC Paris Business School in Paris between January and March (20 credits):

Innovation and Strategy (5 credits)
Managing Innovation (5 credits)
The product Life Cycle (5 credits)
Leading edge Seminar on Innovating in Europe, Focus on France and South Europe (5 credits)
Dissertation Preparation II

Part 3

This Placement Period takes place between April and September (10 credits for the placement report).

Each student in the programme must spend at least 800 hours in a European organisation, working in a role commensurate with the objectives of the programme. Whilst placement is not guaranteed by the administrators of the programme, students will be offered complete support in sourcing and being selected for placement opportunities in any European country.

This session takes place in Utrecht between October and December (20 credits + 20 credits for the dissertation):

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for the MBS in Innovation in European Business candidates must hold at least a Second Class Honours Grade II primary degree (or equivalent) in either: (1) a Business-related discipline, (2) a relevant area of the Social Sciences and Humanities or (3) in Science / Technology, with a business awareness component as part of the primary degree. Students undertaking a 5 year degree programme must have completed at least 4 years (repeat years excluded) with a second class honours grade II or equivalent.

Candidates who do not meet the Second Class Honours Grade II requirement may be admitted to the programme on the basis of extensive practical or professional experience as deemed appropriate by the Board of Studies of the MBS in Innovation in European Business.

English Language Requirements:

IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL equivalent

This programme is not available in part-time mode.
