Overview of History of Art - Modern and Contemporary Art (MA)

The MA in Modern and Contemporary Art History at University College Cork offers a lively and wide-ranging engagement with key developments in 20th- and 21st-century art. The only Masters degree of its kind in Ireland, the course is designed to combine skills in creative and precise visual analysis, close reading of critical texts, and the cultivation of independent and original research. After the completion of the course, students are equipped with skills that are vital to both further academic study and to the pursuit of a wide variety of careers in the arts.

What will I be Studying?

Programme Requirements

Students take 90 credits as follows:

Part I
HA6006 Theory for Art History (10 credits)
HA6007 Modern Art and Modernity (10 credits)
HA6008 Medium and Meaning (10 credits)
HA6009 Contemporary Art 1945 (10 credits)
HA6010 Literature Review (5 credits)

Part II
HA6011 Dissertation (45 credits)

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this programme, students should be able to:

Identify and cogently discuss key artists, movements and critical debates in modern and contemporary art;
Engage in precise, sustained and lucid formal analysis of works of art, in both oral and written form;
Formulate coherent proposals for original scholarly research according to postgraduate standards;
Deliver creative and robust independent research, presented and referenced according to postgraduate standards;
Write a variety of other critical texts, from seminar presentations to analytical literature reviews, at a high level of proficiency in both content and written form;
Communicate creative independent ideas about the critical and theoretical literature of art history.

Entry Requirements

a) In order to be permitted to proceed to the MA degree in History of Art, a candidate must hold a primary degree with a second class honours Grade I (or equivalent) in the History of Art or a Cognate Discipline. In exceptional circumstances, and subject to the approval of the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences, candidates who hold a primary degree other than Second Class Honours, and who demonstrate a high level of significant and relevant experience, may also be eligible for entry to the programme. Final acceptance is subject to approval by the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences, UCC.
b) An application/statement of purpose (500 words) acceptable to History of Art staff.
c) All candidates must satisfy a selection committee

English Language Requirements:

IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL equivalent
