Overview of Contemporary Chinese Culture and Business (HDip)

This is a one year full-time Higher Diploma (Level 8) in Chinese Studies (CKA25). The Higher Diploma is designed to equip students with knowledge of the Chinese language (Mandarin) and provide them with the expertise towork in a China-facing multi-cultural and international business environment in the future.

Applicants should have at least a primary degree or an equivalent academic and/or professional qualification. Candidates with equivalent educational and/or professional qualifications must be approved by by the Head of the Irish Institute of Chinese Studies and the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences.

What will I be Studying?

The programme will be run between September and July.

PART 1

The program will be divided into three teaching terms. In teaching period one between September to December students will start with twelve weeks’ intensive introduction to Chinese language (Mandarin) and culture at UCC.

In teaching period two between January to March students continue their intensive studies on Chinese language (Mandarin), culture, history, politics, economics and business at UCC. Particular emphasis will be placed on achieving proficiency in business Chinese inter-cultural skills required to do business in China.

PART 2

During the Easter period (four weeks) students will prepare to go toChinafor further study and a research or work placement.

In teaching period three (May to July), students will undertake intensive training on Chinese (Mandarin) language and communication skills at UCC’s partner universities.

Then they will either continue their courses at the partner universities or undertake a work placement or pursue an individual research project. Supervision in situ by UCC staff or staff from UCC’s partner universities inChinawill be provided accordingly.

Students will return to UCC in July to finalise their research projects and present their final workshop, which will be assessed by theInstituteofChinese Studies

Students will assemble 60 credits as follows:

Part I: Teaching Periods I and II (at UCC) (September to March)

CH6001 Chinese Language (level I) (Teaching Period 1) 10 Credits

CH6002 Chinese Language (level II) (Teaching Period 2) 10 Credits
CH6003 Introduction to Chinese Culture and Society 5 credits
GV6005 Introduction to Chinese Government and Governance 5 Credits
CH6004 Modern History of China 5 Credits
CH6006 Chinese Business and Negotiations 5 Credits

Part II: Study and Placement in China (May to July)

CH6007 Research Projects/Work placement (in China) 10 Credits
Intensive Courses on Chinese Culture and Business Skills (in China) 10 Credits

Assessment : portfolio of course work, Chinese language tests, formal presentation of work placement/research project.

IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL equivalent.
