This full-time postgraduate programme, requiring 36 months of study, is the first taught doctorate programme in orthodontics in Ireland.
The programme has been approved by the Irish Committee for Specialist Training in Dentistry and also meets the educational requirements for the Membership/Fellowship diplomas in Orthodontics of the Royal Colleges.
The programme provides a balanced education with a strong emphasis on clinical foundation, didactics and research. The programme combines relevant basic sciences with clinical orthodontic training. Postgraduate students participate in the prevention and correction of malocclusions and facial disproportions to achieve the best functional and aesthetic outcomes. Emphasis is placed on facial morphology, growth and on relevant related function of the neuromuscular system. Instruction is presented through lectures, seminars, demonstrations and conferences. This is supplemented and emphasized by clinical treatment of patients. Reflection is facilitated on experience and understanding of all aspects of the taught clinical and research components. The period of instruction will also enhance the analytical skills required for effective, contemporary, orthodontic practice.
A student who wishes to proceed to the award of a DClinDent (Orthodontics) degree must:
He/She will be required to complete a three year programme and accumulate 270 credits over the three years. The candidate's research must be carried out, and the thesis for the degree must be prepared, under the direction of the Supervisor.
Study for the DClinDent (Orthodontics) comprises clinical, laboratory, theoretical and research components. It is modular in format.

Potential applicants should demonstrate evidence of work experience at a professional level which reflects responsibilities and potential for career development. Candidates should also have a high degree of computer literacy, excellent inter-personal skills and excellent personal managment skills. They should also demonstrate on-going commitment to personal, professional and career development. Both academic and professional references conveying suitability for and commitment to completing the programme will also be sought.
