Overview of MSC in MIS (MSc)

The Degree of MSc by Research offers students with at least a 2H1 primary degree in a relevant discipline an opportunity to pursue research on a specialist topic of their choice.  The degree is particularly suited to those interested in studying the application of emerging technology to modern business.  As part of the programme, students may opt to engage in the development of an innovative software solution for a particular business or industry sector.  The programme aims to equip candidates with the in-depth IS/IT knowledge that is highly relevant to modern business professionals, and develop the advanced theoretical and research capabilities of graduate students.

Research Areas

Those undertaking the programme participate in a series of seminars and produce a thesis.

Seminars

Seminars are presented on research methods and current issues.

Research Methods in MIS:  This series of seminars considers the use of research methods within the Information Systems discipline.  The issue of selecting an appropriate research method is covered, as are issues to do with data collection and analysis, both qualitative and quantitative.

Current Research Issues in MIS:  This series of seminars considers current theory and research topics in the MIS field.

Thesis

The thesis represents an in-depth study of the candidate's chosen specialism.  It is typically between 40,000 to 60,000 words, and is formally supervised by staff within the Department.

Entry Requirements

A candidate must have obtained a standard of at least Second Class Honours, Grade I, in an approved primary degree to gain entry to the programme.
