Sporting Success 2010 - 2011

2010/2011 was one of the most successful years for UCC Sports Clubs.

Such successes included:

  • Athletics Club:
    • UCC Ladies team: U23 Cork County and Munster Cross Country Champions
    • UCC Men’s team: U23 Munster Cross Country Champions
    • Clare Fitzgerald won 4 gold medals at her first intervarsity outdoor track & field event in Shot Putt, Javelin, Discuss and Long Distance Throw
    • Sally McCarthy – County U23 Cross Country champion
    • Barry Donovan – Munster U23 Cross Country Champion
    • UCC won the Annual Colours Cross Country Event against CIT for the 3rd year in a row
  • Basketball Club:
    • Ladies – Intervarsity winners – 3-in-a-row
    • Colleges League Finalists
    • Claire Rockall – MVP at intervarsities, Colleges All Star along with Aine Mckenna
    • Claire Rockall, Aine McKenna members of Team Montenotte Glanmire who were SuperLeague Finalists in 2011
  • Badminton Club:
    • Intervarsity winners
    • Munster Club winners – 5-in-a-row
    • Various Cork League and Munster League and Cup successes
  • Boxing Club:
    • UCC won 5 titles at the Novice Intervarsities
  • Camogie Club: Fresher Intervarsity winners
    • Senior Colleges League winners
    • Ashbourne finalists
    • Julie Brien – All Ireland Club Final winner with Kilimor, Galway
    • Julie Brien, Susan earner and Katrina Hayes selected on the Ashbourne All Star team for 2010/11
  • Canoe Club:
    • UCC runners up in the intervarsity
    • Aisling Ni Ghriofa – Irish Senior Kayaking Team
  • Fencing Club:
    • Aoife O Loughlin – Irish Senior International
  • Gaelic Football Club:
    • Sigerson Cup Winners
    • Colleges League Finalists
    • Michael Shields, Ken O Halloran, Eoin Cotter and Sean Kiely members of the Cork team who won the All Ireland Senior Final
    • Ulster Bank Rising All Star Team: Ken O Halloran, Peter Crowley, Eoin O Mahony, Sean Kiely, James Fitzpatrick, Mark Collins, Kevin O Driscoll, J B Spillane
    • Southside Sports Star Awards in association with Cork International Hotel – March winner: Barry O Driscoll
    • 96FM in association with the Rochestown Park Hotel GAA Award for the month of March – Billy Morgan, UCC Sigerson Cup team coach
    • West Cork / Celtic Ross Hotel Sports Star Award for March: Kevin O Driscoll
  • Golf Club:
    • Emma O Driscoll – Irish Senior International, Munster Senior Interpro player, Selected to represent Ireland at the World Student Games in China in August 2011
    • Ian O Rourke - member of the Munster Senior Interpros Team
  • Handball Club:
    • Ashley Prendiville – All Ireland champion at 60 x 30 singles and doubles, 40 x 20 doubles champion, intervarsity 60 x 30 champion
    • David Walsh – World Collegiate Men’s A Category winner
  • Hurling Club:
    • Fresher’s All-Ireland Champions
    • Fresher B Championship winners
    • Intermediate League winners
    • Junior Championship winners
    • Michael Cahill – All Ireland U21 and Senior All Ireland medal winner with Tipperary in Sept 2010
    • Ulster Bank Rising Stars: Philip O Loughlin, Luke O Farrell, Dean Brosnan
  • Inline Hockey Club:
    • UCC won their first tournament in the clubs history when they defeated Cork, Galway and Kilkenny in a tournament this year
  • Judo Club:
    • UCC Club won 10 medals at the intervarsities
  • Kickboxing Club:
    • UCC won 12 medals at the IUTF International Irish Championships
  • Ladies Gaelic Football/CamogieClubs:
    • Grainne Kenneally – Waterford –beaten All Ireland Finalist in: Junior Camogie and Intermediate Gaelic Football
    • Orla Cotter and Jill Horan - members of the Inch Rovers team who won the All Ireland Senior Club title in 2011
  • Ladies Hockey Club:
    • Retained All Ireland League status
    • Miriam Crowley – Irish Senior International
    • Irish Universities selection: Olivia Roycroft, Kate Murphy and Ali O Regan
    • Munster Senior Interprovincial team – Ali O Regan and Olivia Roycroft – Interprovincial winners
    • 4 UCC students/graduate named on the Munster “Team of the Decade”: Miriam Crowley, Rachael Kohler, Julia O Halloran and Audrey O Flynn
  • Men’s Hockey Club:
    • Irish Trophy Cup finalists
    • Andrew Gray and Peter Catchpole – Munster Senior Interpos
  • Rowing Club:
    • Justin Ryan – Intervarsity senior single skull champion
    • Irish Senior Rower – member of the Irish Elite Squad
    • Peter Hanily – Member of the Irish Elite Squad
    • UCC – Cork Head of River winners
  • Rugby Club:
    • Retained All Ireland League Division 1b status
    • Junior Intervarsity winners
    • Philip Donnellan and John Ryan selected on the “Club Ireland” team
  • Soccer Club:
    • Collingwood Cup winners
    • Josh O Shea – Man of the Match in Collingwood Cup Final
