Testimonial on Certificate in Irish Studies

Certificate in Irish Studies - Feedback

I was not your average student, looking for an average study abroad program.  I wanted a program that would enrich my life and continue my learning experience.  I wanted a year of study that amounted to something.   The Certificate in Irish Studies at University College Cork far exceeded even my wildest dreams.

The multi-disciplinary approach afforded me the opportunity to study across the University, taking classes in different departments.  Courses were offered in Archaeology, the Irish language, History, Celtic Civilization; Literature and Folklore.  There was a required curriculum, but there was also enough flexibility to add courses in subject areas of interest to me.

I won't kid anyone.  While the course work was interesting, it was also challenging.  But, in the end, the experience was so worth the extra effort needed to complete the program.  It also made me aware that the Certificate means something.  Those who finish it know that others who have completed the program have put effort and work into their studies.

Because I was allowed to take classes in different areas of the University, I saw a broad range of instructors and got to see how another educational system functioned.  I also had the opportunity to take the majority of my classes with mostly Irish students.  International students are integrated into the University.

The course work was never boring.  The Archaeology class alone was amazing.  It was fascinating to participate in planned field trips to ancient sites in Ireland with trained archaeologists to explain their significance.  Learning the Irish language, both modern and old, was a real treat.

Another bonus of the Certificate Program is the International Education Office.  The office provided the extra assistance I needed to get settled into the city, the University and the Program.  And the staff members are just great people who can help students through some of the differences in schools and cultures.

I highly recommend the Certificate in Irish Studies at the University College Cork.  It would be an excellent addition to a student’s college experience in general and an especially beneficial aspect of studying abroad.
