Study Abroad Opportunities for UCC Students in the United States of America and Canada

UCC invites applications from students at undergraduate and postgraduate level to participate in exchange programmes with the institution's partner universities in the US and Canada. While students from any discipline may apply to participate in the scholarship and exchange programmes it should be noted that UCC’s partner universities and colleges do restrict access in certain academic areas. Please note that first year students are not eligible to apply to participate in the exchange programmes. The university does not permit final year students to undertake part of their studies at a university abroad.

University of California Exchange:

The University of California (UC) is a public university system in the state of California.

The University of California's campuses boast large numbers of distinguished faculty in almost every field. Eight of its undergraduate campuses are ranked among the top 100, six among the top 50, and two among the top 25 U.S. universities by both the U.S. News and World Report and the Academic Ranking of World Universities.

The exchange with the University of California is open to undergraduate students.  Students participating in the exchange receive a tuition fee waiver from UCal.

Visiting Scholar Programme at the University of California:  

Status: Open for applications

Application Form: 

Post-first year PhD students may spend a term, semester or year at the University of California. Visiting scholars do not enrol in courses (although they can audit), but rather engage in research. The programme can be a good option for PhD students or junior faculty who primarily need access to archives and libraries etc., or who want to work with a particular scholar or research group. The visiting scholar must secure an invitation from a willing University of California professor and department. Students may apply to participate in the Visiting Scholar Programme at any time during the academic year. Please note that a 4 month lead-in is required for the application process to be completed.

Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago

Illinois Institute of Technology is a national, technological, Ph.D.-granting research university, with world-renowned programmes in engineering, architecture, the sciences, humanities, psychology, business, law, and design.

Founded in 1940 and tracing its roots back to the 1890s with the foundings of Armour Institute of Technology and Lewis Institute, IIT brings a focused, interdisciplinary approach to education, including the Interprofessional Projects Programme.

With five campuses throughout the Chicago area and alumni around the world, IIT pairs the educational and cultural experiences of America's Second City with the small feel of an undergraduate population of just over 2300 and total population of just over 7400.

Applications are invited from UCC students at undergraduate or postgraduate level to spend the 2012/2013 academic year at the Illinois Institute of Technology.  The successful student, who will be of honours standard, will receive remission of tuition fees.

 

 

St Norbert College

St Norbert College is located in De Pere, Wisconsin. For two decades St. Norbert has been ranked among the top Midwest colleges in the United States. Recently the Carnegie Commission elevated the college to national liberal arts standing, which resulted in its national ranking by U.S. News & World Report. St. Norbert is also recognized by the Princeton Review as a “Best College” and the by Templeton Foundation’s Honor Roll for Character Building Colleges.

Pitzer College, Claremont, California

Pitzer College began in 1964 with an entering class of 153 students. The founding faculty, students, and staff designed Pitzer as an innovative liberal arts institution. The College's pioneering programmes embraced interdisciplinarity in teaching and learning. Today, Pitzer enrols approximately 1,000 students in more than 40 fields of study leading to the bachelor of arts degree. Some of the more popular concentrations are psychology, sociology, political studies, media studies, environmental studies and art.

At the base of the San Gabriel Mountains, Claremont enjoys an excellent climate year round. Mountain skiing and hiking, desert and ocean sports are within an hour’s drive. Los Angeles, one of the largest and most exciting cities in the world, is easily reached via commuter rail.

State University of New York at Cortland (SUNY)

Located atop one of the rolling hills in central New York's "City of Seven Valleys," the State University of New York College at Cortland was founded in 1868. Today 7,300 students are pursuing degrees within the College's three academic divisions — arts and sciences, education and professional studies. Twenty-eight academic departments with a faculty of more than 500 offer the SUNY Cortland student body 67 undergraduate majors and 34 graduate majors from which to choose. The College's main campus covers 191 acres.

University of Massachusetts at Amherst

The University of Massachusetts at Amherst, the flagship campus of the University of Massachusetts system, sits on nearly 1,450-acres in the scenic Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts, 90 miles from Boston and 175 miles from New York City. The campus provides a rich cultural environment in a rural setting close to major urban centers.

 

A UCC student at undergraduate level will be invited to study at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst for the 2012/2013 academic year.  In addition to a tuition and registration fee waiver, the successful candidate, who will be of honours standard, will be the recipient of the William L. Markey Scholarship.  The scholarship is to the value of approximately $2000.

 

University of Montana

The University of Montana was founded in 1893 in Missoula.  It is a public institution with programmes in arts and sciences, business administration, fine arts, education, forestry, journalism and pharmacy and allied sciences.  With a student population of ca 10,000, the University of Montana campus has been voted the most scenic campus in the US by Rolling Stone Magazine.  Applications are invited from UCC students at undergraduate or postgraduate level to spend the 2012/2013 academic year at the University of Montana.  Successful students, who will be of honours standard, will receive remission of tuition fees.

 

 

Washington College

Washington College is a liberal arts institution located 75 miles from Baltimore, Philadelphia and Washington D.C.  The college has a particularly strong reputation in English and offers a nationally renowned creative writing programme.  Applications are invited from UCC students at undergraduate level to spend the 2012/2013 academic year at Washington College.  Successful students, who will be of honours standard, will receive remission of tuition fees.
