What is Assistive Technology?

An Assistive Technology (AT) device is defined as ‘… any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities’. In Education Assistive Technology is mainly used to to improve or facilitate a students’ access to computers or electronic resources.

How can I avail of Assistive Technology?

To avail of the support of Assistive Technology in UCC students must register with the Disability Support Service.  When a student registers with the Service a Needs Assessment is carried out and the Disability Advisor feels AT is required, students are referred to the Assistive Technology Officer for an AT Assessment.

The AT Assessment will look at your:

  • IT skills
  • AT Needs
  • Look at any equipment/software that was used in 2nd Second Level.
  • Take into consideration including whether student will be involved in Lab Work, Work Placement, Erasmus etc to ensure that the software/hardware recommended is appropriate for students throughout their study in UCC
  • Training required
