While going through the work placement application process, the Careers Office in UCC provided training courses covering techniques for team discussion, presentations, interviews and many other topics. This training was extremely helpful for Jum as he had never faced an interview before. Jum was fortunate to get a job in M/A-COM Technology Solutions Ltd, a pioneer in microwave and radio frequency technology, on his first interview. The placement lasted for about four months, and he worked within the MVS team, which is an important part of M/A-COM. Jum really enjoyed his experience and now further understands VCO (Voltage Control Oscillator) design, teardown, soldering and testing skills. He also benefited from some financial training.
Apart from all that work on technical matters, Jum manages to have some fun! He has performed in Dublin, in Cork City Hall (see above) and has taken part in the Intervarsity traditional dance competition. The story was covered by an Irish newspaper.
Over the last year he had made lots of good friends from the UK, the US, Ireland and France. Jum is enjoying a fantastic social life thanks to his involvement in Dance Club. He has participated in many performances, competitions and has worked as a Hip Hop dance teacher.
Says Jum: “Overall, I had an enjoyable experience with M/A-COM over the summer. The work placement gave me a clear idea how to complete a project from beginning to end and gave me valuable commercial experience. I would like to say thanks to the Careers Office and the International Education Office in UCC. I would also like to thank staff in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, because I couldn’t have made it without them.”
