Bringing UCC’s research to life!

The third edition of The Boolean, Snapshots of Doctoral Research at University College Cork, is now available to read at http://publish.ucc.ie/boolean/current

‌The Boolean is a unique on-line journal which was introduced in 2010 as a novel way to make the wide diversity of research being undertaken by some of UCC’s 1,200 doctoral students known to as wide an audience as possible, in a style with which those without any expertise in the relevant fields could engage. The first two volumes (2010 and 2011) have been very successful and, following their online publication, have been accessed and read widely all over the world, with many articles being downloaded hundreds of times.

In preparation of this volume, UCC’s Doctoral students were invited to submit short articles on their research which would be accessible to a non-specialist audience, both within and outside UCC. The articles that appear in this volume describe research from right across the Colleges of UCC and topics range from superheroes to Irishness, wireless communication to James Joyce and subjects as diverse as Parkinson’s disease, the Comfort Women of South Korea and the conversation between plants and bacteria.

The articles within all three volumes of The Boolean highlight the breadth and quality of doctoral research ongoing within UCC. The third volume was launched at UCC on Thursday 4 October, and a special address was given by Allan Prosser, Consultant Editor of the Irish Examiner, who challanged the students to think more about how to best make their message heard in the modern media and social landscape.

Those involved hope all readers will find these articles stimulating, interesting and informative, and thank all those who have contributed to this volume.
