Adelina Syms graduated from UL in 2002 with a first class honours in German and French, and holds a MA in Translation Studies with French and German since 2005.
She commenced her PhD studies in January 2011, with a project entitled “Man’s Inhumanity to Woman- Gendering Second World War Suffering”, supervised by Dr Sandra McAvoy, Dr Gert Hofmann, and Professor Nuala Finnegan.
My PhD project examines the topic of mass rape perpetrated in Germany in 1945 by the Russian Red Army. As such my primary research material stems from a corpus of interviews conducted in the last decade with elderly German female victims. To date I have almost transcribed and translated all 27 interviews and I will be utilising the method and methodology of critical discourse analysis in order to analyse these testimonies. One of my research questions will ask about bearing witness to such events.
