Biography, including positions held and research interests

Clara Byrne has been a practising Speech and Language Therapist since she graduated from Trinity College, Dublin in 1998 with a BSc(Clinical Speech and Language Studies). She has worked predominately with children and their families in Community Care Clinics, but has had experience working with children with Specific Language Impairment in Language Classes and adults in a rehabilitation unit post-CVA. Clara is currently responsible for managing the paediatric caseload in the catchment area of the on-site University clinic in the Brookfield Health Sciences Complex. Clara has a strong interest in student education. When the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences, UCC was established in 2003, she worked firstly as a part-time Problem Based Learning Tutor, then as the therapist working in the on-site University clinic and now in the position of Practice Tutor. Clara became Practice Tutor for South Lee (HSE area) in July 2007. This post involves:

  • Tutoring second year students during their weekly clinics in the onsite clinic and the Mahon School Project.
  • Giving presentations to the students regarding their practice experience.
  • Organising the student placements in the South Lee area throughout the academic year.
  • Providing support and training to the practice educators in South Lee during placements.
  • Providing clinical tutorials to second, third and fourth year students to support their learning on their block placements.
  • Evaluating the students’ clinical skills at all levels.

Clara graduated from University College Cork with a MSc in Advanced Healthcare Practice in June 2008. Her topic of research was speech and language therapy students learning about interpersonal communication skills.
