Study Sociology at UCC


Sociology graduates are in demand in todays work-place for their analytical and research skills and their capacity for considered judgement. The Department of Sociology at University College, Cork, offers a complete programme from BA to PhD. We prepare students for a wide range of vocations, offering both general analytical and workplace competences. Our intellectual ethos is one of pluralism, tolerance and openness to new perspectives, concerns and issues. We communicate to students the cumulative richness of the discipline while encouraging them to develop their own distinctive perspectives.

Our programme covers a wide range of theoretical and empirical research traditions and seeks to develop in students the capacity to ask probing questions on pivotal social issues. Offering courses at undergraduate level on social and critical theory, research methodology, globalization and development, historical sociology, media, the family, gender and sexuality, criminology, urban life, science and technology, the environment, ethnicity, religion, political sociology, community. There are further specialised area-based courses on Ireland (north and south), Europe and the Developing World.

Our department’s staff are internationally reputed in their areas of expertise and have consistently won major international, national and university research awards. There are currently nine lecturers teaching sociology at both undergraduate and post-graduate levels. Other staff are employed in a part-time lecturing, tutoring, post-doctoral or other research capacity. The Department  of Sociology offers an intellectually stimulating and personally supportive environment in which students can progress from their first steps in sociology to an advanced command of the discipline.
