The SEFS PG Handbook 2023 is a useful resource on postgraduate education, research supervision, and human resources policies and practice relevant for our postgraduate community.

Postgraduate Student Committee

The College of SEFS Postgraduate Student Committee comprises of one member of each academic unit in the College, Tyndall National Institute, ERI, MAREI and Teagasc appointed by the postgraduate students. Its role is to provide leadership for postgraduate students and to support the College of SEFS Graduate Studies Committee (GSC) in the fulfilment of the graduate studies aspects of the College Strategic Plan.

Postgraduate Training Modules and Skills Centre

The postgraduate training modules have been identified as generic and transferable skills relevant to PhD student education at University College Cork. Their relevance may vary upon experiential learning, disciplinary and professional development needs. PhD students may take a selection of these modules as part of their structured PhD or as stand alone modules where the credits would appear on the academic transcript of results (but not on the final degree parchment).

  • For a 3 year PhD, the maximum number of credits that can be undertaken is 30 credits.
  • For a 4 year PhD, the maximum number of credits that can be undertaken is 90 credits.

Student Well-Being

Some students will, from time to time, encounter problem situations which they are not able to handle very well during their time in UCC. These may be personal, financial or academic difficulties. Should you find yourself in this position, our experience is that the sooner you seek help, the easier it is to ensure a satisfactory resolution, whatever the reason for your problems. There are many people on campus to help you. A wide range of specific supports are provided. Ms. Emily Chambers is also available to speak to you about your concerns and any issues, suggestions or questions which may arise during your time as a student in SEFS at UCC.
