UCC RSS & Library Workshop: Citation Analysis and Research Impact - SciVal Analytics Tool

In recent years, citation and bibliometric analysis tools have become increasingly important in measuring and assessing the research impact of individuals, units and institutions, and to inform institutional operational and strategic decision-making. This type of analysis is also key component of the scoring mechanism of international university ranking exercises.

To meet the information needs of HEIs, a number of advanced research intelligence tools have emerged that allow organisations to analyse and interpret large amounts of aggregated bibliographic data, to benchmark against peer institutions, and to identify research trends, potential collaborations and funding opportunities.

UCC Research Support Services (RSS), together with Library colleagues, and in collaboration with other Irish universities (through the IUA/ IReL consortium), recently investigated a number of solutions and, following this process, are now implementing the SciVal analytics tool to support the above objectives.

SciVal is a set of integrated online modules that enable institutions to make evidence-based strategic decisions based on citation and bibliometric data. The resource consists of three modules:

1. Overview - Provides an overview of the research performance of our institutions and others, based on output, impact and collaborations.

2. Benchmarking - Compares our institution and teams to others based on performance metrics, and allows modelling of different test scenarios.

3. Collaboration - Identifies and analyses existing and potential collaboration opportunities.

To introduce SciVal to the UCC research community, an Informtion Workshop is being hosted by UCC RSS and the Library:

Location: G.05, Brookfield Health Sciences Complex
