Biography

Dr. Eugene Dempsey is a Consultant Neonatologist in the Cork University Maternity Hospital and Clinical Senior Lecturer with the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health, University College Cork. He qualified from University College Cork in 1995, trained in the Coombe Women and Infants University Hospital, National Maternity Hospital Holles Street and Our Lady’s Hospital Crumlin before moving McGill University, Montreal where he completed subspeciality training in Neonatology at the Royal Victoria Hospital and Montreal Children’s Hospital, McGill University (2002-2005). He obtained his CSST in Paediatrics in 2004 from the RCPI and his Certificate of Neonatal Fellowship, McGill University in 2005. His research in Montreal formed the basis of his Masters Doctorate awarded from UCC in 2008 for work on Hypotension in the Preterm infant. This original work explored the relationship between hypotension, treatment and adverse outcome in the preterm infant. He returned to Ireland in 2005 to work as a Consultant Neonatologist in Coombe Women and Infants University Hospital and Our Lady’s Hospital for Children Crumlin and was an honorary Clinical Lecturer in University College Dublin. He moved to his current post in Cork University Maternity Hospital in 2007.

Dr. Dempsey has a keen interest in clinical research and evidence based neonatology. He is local principal investigator for the NIPPV Trial and is supervising a number of ongoing clinical research studies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. He has continued to develop his interest in circulatory support of the preterm infant focussing on the role of near infrared spectroscopy and echocardiography in evaluating cerebral oxygenation and systemic perfusion of the preterm infant. He has a Cochrane fellowship for his work on newborn resuscitation and has a number of ongoing reviews. He has a significant interest in ethical issues pertaining to the newborn infant and obtained a Masters of Science in Ethics and Law from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in November 2008. His thesis was on the ethical and legal issues of extreme prematurity in Ireland.
