BIOAVAILABILITY
Our bioavailability model simulates what occurs during human digestion. We use our model to ‘digest’ the test food, and then add the digested food to human intestinal cells in culture. Therefore, we can determine how much of a nutrient is available for intestinal absorption and how much is actually absorbed by intestinal cells.
Our model has been established for investigating the bioavailability of vitamin A, vitamin E and the phytochemicals known as carotenoids. The types of foods we have tested include:
- Baby meals (organic vs non-organic)
- Enriched and non-enriched meat products
- Fruit juices
- Fruits
- Pork sausages
- Vegetable juices
- Vegetables
- Yoghurt
