BIOACTIVITY

We can determine the potential bioactivity of various compounds sourced from plants, the marine environment, dairy, meat, supplements and other sources.

The types of compounds we have tested include:

  • Phytochemicals:
      • Carotenoids
      • Flavonoids
      • Plant sterols and stanols
      • Herb extracts
  • Softwood knot extracts
  • Phytosterol oxidation products (POPs)
  • Cholesterol oxidation products (COPs)
  • N on-enriched and functional ingredient-enriched meat products
  • Non-enriched and functional ingredient-enriched yoghurt
  • Casein-derived hydrolysates

The different biomarkers we can determine include:

Biomarker
Assays
Toxicity  MTT, Neutral Red Uptake, Protein content, DNA synthesis
 Cell membrane integrity
 FDA/EtBr, LDH release, Trypan Blue

Antioxidant

Bench-based

Cell-based

DPPH, FRAP, Total Phenol Content/Folin-Ciocalteau Reducing Capacity, Ascorbic acid content

Glutathione content, Catalase activity, Superoxide Dismutase activity, Reactive oxygen Species production

DNA integrity/damage
Alkaline Single Cell Gel Electrophoresis (comet)
 Apoptosis  Hoechst staining, DNA Fragmentation
 Immune modulation
Cell proliferation, Cytokine production, PKC Kinase activity
