Micro Credential and Firkin Crane

 

The Introduction to Inclusive Dance: Steps Toward Choreography is part of a drive to better include part-time learners with disAbility to access higher education, develop creative skills in dance making, improvisation, and choreography, and expand provision in a flexible manner to people who otherwise do not access arts provision at University. Students are introduced to practical skills in choegraphy and performative stage presence.

The Introduction to Inclusive Dance: Improvisation as a Method for Inclusion micro-credential  is part of a drive to better include part-time learners with disAbility to access higher education, develop advanced creative skills in dance making, improvisation, and choreography, and expand provision in a flexible manner to people who otherwise do not access arts provision at University. Improvisation is explored as the primary and most important technique for inclusion within contemporary dance, and refinsed improvisational skills are developed.

Primary: people with physical disAbility and/or neurodiverse profiles who have a strong passion for and interest in the performing arts, the stage arts and movement, but who have not been able to access specific educational frameworks that work with their own specific learning styles, body alignments and unique talents.

Additional Teaching Mode Information

Both micro-credentials will run concurrently within the 8 x 2 day blocks in a dance laboratory setting at Firkin Crane. Learning is practical. Both micro-credentials are taken at the same time and are not available to take separately.

IDC runs over five 2 day blocks, one 5 day intensive, and one 4 day intensive from January to May 2024, taking place at Dance Cork Firkin Crane.

  1. Week 1 Sunday 4 and Monday 5 February, 10am to 6pm
  2. Week 2 Sunday 18 and Monday 19 February, 10am to 6pm
  3. Week 3 Sunday 10 and Monday 11 March, 10am to 6pm
  4. Week 4 Tuesday 12, Wednesday 13 and Thursday 14 March, 10am to 5pm
  5. Week 5 Sunday 21 and Monday 22 April, 10am to 6pm
  6. Week 6 Sunday 5 and Monday 6 May, 10am to 6pm
  7. Week 7 Sunday 19 and Monday 20 May, 10am to 6pm
  8. Week 8 Tuesday 21 May and Wednesday 22 May, 10am to 6pm

Requirements

  • Academic requirements: leaving cert or equivalent to a passing level.
  • Written requirement: 250 word statement of interest in movement as an art form.
  • Audition to ensure student is able to engage with pedagogy. Audition will be by video and take 10-15 minutes via zoom. 

 

Fees and Costs

Each micro-credential costs €1,000.  A fee subsidy of 90% is supported by UCC Theatre’s Inclusion Initiative so students pay €100 for each 5 credit micro-credential. €200 is collected during the online application as both micro-credentials are applied for together.
