Statute K.

Universities Act, 1997

University College Cork -- National University of Ireland, Cork

We, the Governing Body of University College Cork – National University of Ireland, Cork (“the University”) under and by virtue of the powers conferred on us by the above Act, do by this present instrument under the Seal of the University make the Statute contained in the Schedule hereof for the general government of the said University.

Given under the Common Seal of the University this Twelfth day of June 2007 .

SCHEDULE

Statute K

Statutes I. to 178 of University College, Cork and Statutes A to J of University College Cork- National University of Ireland Cork, shall be read and construed with the additions, modifications and amendments hereinafter set forth.

CHAPTER I
Bord na Gaeilge

  1. There shall be established in the University, Bord na Gaeilge, (“An Bord”).
  2. The duties of An Bord shall be:
    1. to make proposals to the Governing Body in relation to the provision of courses which include instruction through Irish leading to university degrees or other distinctions of the University, in subjects or disciplines in which such instruction is already provided through English.
    2. To make proposals to the Governing Body in relation to the establishment of courses of instruction through Irish in areas or disciplines in which courses are not provided through English.
    3. To make proposals to the Governing Body in relation to the provision of adequately trained staff who will be capable of conducting and teaching such courses through Irish.
    4. To make proposals to the Governing Body in relation to extending and improving the use of Irish in the University generally.
  3. An Bord shall report to the Governing Body and shall forward a written report to the Governing Body at least annually. The Governing Body shall consider the views of the Academic Council on all proposals made to it by An Bord.
  4. An Bord shall consist of:
    1. the President or his/her nominee;
    2. the Registrar or his/her nominee;
    3. all holders of Professorships in the Irish Language by whatever title known;
    4. Oifigeach na Gaeilge of the University’s Students’ Union;
    5. two members elected by the Governing Body;
    6. two members elected by the Academic Council;
    7. one representative elected by each of the Colleges of
      1. Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences;
      2. Business and Law;
      3. Medicine and Health;
      4. Science, Engineering and Food Science;
    8. not more than two members who shall be co-opted by the members in categories (a) to (g).

    9. Those members in categories (a), (b),(c) and (d) shall be ex officio members of An Bord.
  5. The proceedings of An Bord shall be conducted through the medium of Irish. Reports to Governing Body and Academic Council shall be in both Irish and English.
  6. An Bord may establish such and so many sub-committees as it deems necessary for the proper fulfillment of its terms of reference as herein set forth.
  7. The term of office of the elected members of An Bord shall be contemporaneous and co-terminus with the term of office of the Governing Body.
  8. Statute 95, Chapter 1 , of University College Cork, as already amended, is hereby further amended as follows:
    (a) By the deletion of Sections 1 to 6.
  9. Statute 140, Chapter 2 , of University College Cork, is hereby deleted.
  10. Statute D, Chapter 2, of University College Cork-National University of Ireland, Cork, is hereby deleted.

CHAPTER II
The Making of Statutes

Statute 1, Chapter 7 , Section 3, The Powers and Duties of Governing Body, is hereby amended by replacement of the words: “Provided that in computing the said periods of two months and three months in ( c ) and ( d ) respectively, no account shall be had of the months of July, August, or September.” by the words: “Provided that in computing the said periods of two months and three months in ( c ) and ( d ) respectively, no account shall be had of the months of July or August.”

CHAPTER III

  1. This Statute may be cited as Statute K of University College Cork - National University of Ireland, Cork or Statute K of U.C.C.
  2. This Statute shall come into operation on the Twelfth day of June 2007.
