Statute LXXXVII.

Irish Universities Act, 1908

University College, Cork

We, the Governing Body of University College, Cork, under and by virtue of the powers in that behalf conferred on us by the said Act, Do by this present instrument under the Seal of University College, Cork, make the Statute contained in the Schedule hereof for the general government of the said College.

Given under the Common Seal of University College, Cork, this twenty-ninth day of June, 1971.

Statute LXXXVII.

Schedule

Statutes I. to LXXXVI. of University College, Cork shall be read and construed with the additions, modifications and amendments hereinafter set forth.

CHAPTER I.
Professorship of Computer Science

  1. There shall be established in the College, in the event of its institution by the National University of Ireland, a Professorship of Computer Science.

  2. The said professorship shall be a full time office within the meaning of the statutes of the College and of the University. The stipend of the Professorship shall be the same as that set out in Statute LXXXVI., Chapter I., section 4(a)(ii). The provisions of Statute LXVII., Chapter IV., as amended, shall also apply to the office.

  3. The duties of the professor shall be to lecture in Computer Science for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College. He shall also examine in Computer Science for the College and, if required by the Senate to do so, for the University.

  4. The said professorship shall be a pensionable office to which the provisions of Statute LXXIX., as amended, and the Pension Scheme annexed thereto, as amended, shall apply.

CHAPTER II.
Professorship of Social Medicine

  1. There shall be established in the College, in the event of its institution by the National University of Ireland, a Professorship of Social Medicine.

  2. The said professorship shall be a full time office within the meaning of the statutes of the College and of the University. The stipend of the professorship shall be the same as that set out in Statute LXXXVI., Chapter I., section 4(a) (ii). The provisions of Statute LXVII., Chapter IV., as amended, shall also apply to the office.

  3. The duties of the professor shall be to lecture in Social Medicine for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College. He shall also examine in Social Medicine for the College and, if required by the Senate to do so, for the University.

  4. The said professorship shall be a pensionable office to which the provisions of Statute LXXXIX., as amended, and the Pension Scheme annexed thereto, as amended, shall apply.

  5. The said professorship is intended to be in substitution for the Lectureship in Social Medicine established by Statute LXVII., Chapter VIII. which said lectureship shall cease to exist if the holder thereof is appointed to the professorship hereby established or ceases by resignation or otherwise to hold office.

CHAPTER III.
Professorships of Old and Medieval English

The Professorship of Old and Medieval English established by Statute LXXIV., Chapter II., shall with the consent of the present holder of the office, henceforth be known as the Professorship of Old and Middle English and the duties of the professor in relation to Old and Medieval English shall, with the consent of the present holder of the professorship, henceforth be deemed to be duties in relation to Old and Middle English and said Statute LXXIV. and all subsequent statutes shall be read and construed accordingly.

CHAPTER IV.
Directorship of the Computer Bureau and
Lectureship in Computer Science

  1. There shall be established in the College the post of Director of the Computer Bureau. In the discharge of the duties of this post the Director shall manage the College computer facilities as a service unit for the various departments, divisions and offices of the College and in this shall be responsible to the Governing Body of the College. He shall also be charged with the duty of implementing the policy laid down by the Governing Body in regard to the College computer services.

  2. The post of Director of the Computer Bureau shall initially be held by the present holder of the Lectureship in Computer Science established by Statute LXXII., Chapter V.
    The Governing Body shall decide the manner in which his duties shall be apportioned between the Directorship and the Lectureship.

  3. With the consent of the present holder of the aforesaid Lectureship in Computer Science and of the present holder of the Professorship of Electrical Engineering, Statute LXXII., Chapter V., is hereby amended by the substitution of the following for sections 2 3 and 4 thereof:

    "2. The Directorship of the Computer Bureau and the said Lectureship shall jointly be deemed a full-time office within the meaning of the statutes of the College and of the University The stipend for the joint office shall be the same as that set out in Statute LXXXVI.. Chapter I., section 4(a)(ii). The provisions of Statute LXVII., Chapter IV., as amended, shall apply to the joint post.

    "3. The duties of the holder of the joint post shall also include the obligation to lecture in Computer Science under the direction of the Professor of Computer Science for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College. He shall also examine in Computer Science for the College, and, if required by the Senate to do so, for the University.

    "4. The said joint post shall be a pensionable office to which the provisions of Statute LXXIX. (as amended) and the Pension Scheme (as amended) annexed thereto shall apply."

CHAPTER V.
Lectureship in Old and Middle English

  1. There shall be established in the College, in the event of its institution by the National University of Ireland, a lectureship in the Department of English to be known as the Lectureship in Old and Middle English.

  2. The said lectureship shall be a full-time office within the meaning of the statutes of the College and of the University. The stipend of the lectureship shall be the same as that provided in Statute LXXXVI., Chapter 1., section 6(a)(i). The provisions of Statute LXVII., Chapter IV,, as amended, shall also apply to the office.

  3. The duties of the lecturer shall be to lecture in Old and Middle English under the direction of the Professor of Old and Middle English for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College. He shall also examine in Old and Middle English for the College and, if required by the Senate to do so, for the University. He shall, in addition, discharge such other duties appropriate to the office as shall be assigned to him by the said Professor of Old and Middle English.

  4. The said lectureship shall be a pensionable office to which the provisions of Statute LXXIX., as amended, and the Pension Scheme annexed thereto, as amended, shall apply.

CHAPTER VI.
Faculty of Dairy Science
Lectureship in Dairy Technology, No. 1

The Lectureship in Dairy Technology, No. 1, established by Statute LXVI., Chapter VI., shall henceforth be known as the Lectureship of Dairy and Food Technology, No. 1, and the duties of the Lecturer in relation to Dairy Technology as set out in said Statute LXVI. shall henceforth be deemed to be duties in relation to Dairy and Food Technology, and the said Statute LXVI. and all subsequent statutes shall be read and construed accordingly.

CHAPTER VII.
Faculty of Dairy Science
Lectureship in Dairy Technology, No. 2

The Lectureship in Dairy Technology, No. 2, established by Statute LXVI., Chapter VII., shall, with the consent of the present holder of the office, henceforth be known as the Lectureship in Dairy and Food Technology, No. 2, and the duties of the lecturer in relation to Dairy Technology as set out in said Statute LXVI. shall, with the consent of the said present holder of the lectureship, henceforth be deemed to be duties in relation to Dairy and Food Technology, and said Statute LXVI. and all subsequent statutes shall be read and construed accordingly.

CHAPTER VIII.
Increased Stipends

  1. Notwithstanding any provisions to the contrary contained in Statutes I. to LXXXVI. of University College, Cork, the annual stipend of each of the full-time professorships set forth in this section shall, as from 1 January, 1971, be £4,665 increasing by annual increments of £159 to a maximum of £4,860:

    Professorship of Archaeology
    Professorship of Education
    Professorship of Geography
    Professorship of German
    Professorship of Medieval History
    Professorship of Music
    Professorship of Spanish

  2. The annual stipend of each of the part-time professorships set forth in this section shall as from 1 January, 1971, be £1,521:

    Professorship of Common Law, Real Property and Equity
    Professorship of Jurisprudence, Roman Law and Personal Property

CHAPTER IX.
Increased Stipend - Faculty of Dairy Science

Notwithstanding any previsions to the contrary contained in Statutes I. to LXXXVI. of University College, Cork, the annual stipend of the Professorship of Agriculture shall, as from 1 January, 1971, be the same as that provided in Chapter VI., section 1, of this Statute.

CHAPTER X.
Increased Pensions

  1. The Governing Body has, in accordance with the provisions of Clause 8, as amended, of the Pension Scheme annexed to Statute LXXIX., as amended, reviewed the pensions payable to retired participants in the Scheme and to the widows of former participants or retired participants. In consequence thereof the revised annual pensions set out in Columns A and B hereunder shall be payable as and from the dates set forth at the head of each of those Columns:

  2. The pensions set out in the foregoing section in respect of those who retired subsequent to the enactment of Statute LXXIX. are subject to the previsions of Clause 14 of the Pension Scheme.

CHAPTER XI.
Faculties

Statute XXVII., Chapter II., as already amended, is hereby further amended by the substitution of the subject Old and Middle English for the subject Old and Medieval English in the Faculty of Arts.

CHAPTER XII.

The professorships established by this statute shall be tenable for the same term and upon the same conditions and the holders thereof shall be subject to the same duties and obligations as if the said professorships had been included in Statutes I. to LXXXVI. of University College, Cork.

CHAPTER XIII.

  1. This Statute shall be construed with and as part of Statutes I. to LXXXVI. of University College, Cork and may be cited as Statute LXXXVII. of University College, Cork or Stat. LXXXVII. of Univ. Coll. Cork.

  2. This Statute shall come into operation on the seventeenth day of June, 1971.
