Statute LXXIV.

Irish Universities Act, 1908

University College, Cork

We, the Governing Body of University College, Cork, under and by virtue of the powers in that behalf conferred on us by the said Act, Do by this present instrument under the Seal of University College, Cork, make the Statute contained in the Schedule hereof for the general government of the said College.

Given under the Common Seal of University College, Cork, this twenty-fourth day of January, 1967.

Statute LXXIV.

Schedule

Statutes I. to LXXIII. of University College, Cork shall be read and construed with the additions, modifications and amendments hereinafter set forth.

CHAPTER I.
Professorship of Modern English

  1. There shall be established in the College, in the event of its institution by the National University of Ireland, a professorship in the department of English to be known as the Professorship of Modern English.
  2. The said Professorship shall be a full-time office within the meaning of the statutes of the College and of the University. The stipend of the professorship shall be the same as that provided in Statute LXXIII., Chapter I., sec. 4 (a)(ii). The provisions of Statute LXVII., Chapter IV., as amended by Statute LXX., Chapter III., section 1, and by Statute LXXIII., Chapter IV., shall also apply to this office.
  3. The duties of the professor shall be to lecture in Modern English for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College. He shall also examine in Modern English for the College and, if required by the Senate to do so, for the University.
  4. The said professor shall, if so appointed by the Governing Body, act as Head of the Department of English for such period or periods as the Governing Body may decide or until the appointment shall have been terminated by the Governing Body.
  5. The said professorship shall be a pensionable office and Table A of the Additional Pension Scheme annexed to Statute XXXIX., Chapter II., as already amended, is hereby further amended by the addition of the said office thereto.

CHAPTER II.
Professorship of Old and Medieval English

  1. There shall be established in the College, in the event of its institution by the National University of Ireland, a professorship in the department of English to be known as the Professorship of Old and Medieval English.
  2. The said professorship shall be a full-time office within the meaning of the statutes of the College and of the University. The stipend of the professorship shall be the same as that provided in Statute LXXIII., Chapter I., sec. 4 (a)(ii). The provisions of Statute LXVII., Chapter IV., as amended by Statute LXX., Chapter III., section 1 and by Statute LXXIII., Chapter IV., shall also apply to the office.
  3. The duties of the professor shall be to lecture in Old and Medieval English, for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for diplomas and certificates of the College. He shall also examine in Old and Medieval English for the College and, if required by the Senate to do so, for the University.
  4. The said professor shall, if so appointed by the Governing Body, act as Head of the Department of English for such period or periods as the Governing Body may decide or until the appointment shall have been terminated by the Governing Body.
  5. The said professorship shall be a pensionable office and Table A of the Additional Pension Scheme annexed to Statute XXXIX., Chapter II., as already amended, is hereby further amended by the addition of the said office thereto.

CHAPTER III.
Associate Professorship of Irish Language and Literature
(Modern Irish Literature)

  1. There shall be established in the College, in the event of its institution by the National University of Ireland, an associate professorship in the department of Irish Language and Literature to be known as the Associate Professorship of Irish Language and Literature (Modern Irish Literature).
  2. The said associate professorship shall be a full-time office within the meaning of the statutes of the College and of the University. the stipend of the associate professorship shall be £2,680 per annum, increasing by annual increments of £120 to a maximum of £3,280 per annum. The provisions of Statute LXVII., Chapter IV., as amended by Statute LXX., Chapter III., section I, and by Statute LXXIII., Chapter IV., shall also apply to the office.
  3. The principal duties of the associate professor shall be to lecture in Modern Irish Literature for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College. He shall also examine in Modern Irish Literature for the College and, if required by the Senate to do so, for the University. He shall in addition, discharge such other duties appropriate to the office as shall be assigned to him by the said Professor of Irish Language and Literature.
  4. Notwithstanding any provisions to the contrary contained in this or any other Statute, the said associate professor shall not be eligible for appointment as Deputy to the President or as Acting President of the College.
  5. The said associate professorship shall be a pensionable office and Table A of the Additional Pension Scheme annexed to Statute XXXIX., Chapter II., as already amended, is hereby further amended by the addition of the said office thereto.
  6. When the said professorship established by this Chapter shall have been filled, the Professorship of the History of Modern Irish Literature established by Statute XLVIII., Chapter IV., shall thereupon cease to exist.

CHAPTER IV.
Lectureship in Accounting

  1. There shall be established in the College, in the event of its institution by the National University of Ireland, a Lectureship in Accounting.
  2. The said lectureship shall be a full-time office within the meaning of the statutes of the College and of the University. The stipend of the lectureship shall be the same as that provided in Statute LXXIII., Chapter I., section 5(a)(i). The provisions of Statute LXVII., Chapter IV., as amended by Statute LXX., Chapter III., section 1, and by Statute LXXIII., Chapter IV., shall also apply to the office.
  3. The duties of the lecturer shall be to lecture in Accounting for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College. He shall also examine in Accounting for the College and, if required by the Senate to do so, for the University.
  4. The said lectureship shall be a pensionable office and Table A of the Additional Pension Scheme annexed to Statute XXXIX., Chapter II., as already amended, is hereby further amended by the addition of the said office thereto.

CHAPTER V.
Lectureship in Electrical Engineering No. 3

  1. There shall be established in the College, in the event of its institution by the National University of Ireland, a Lectureship in Electrical Engineering, No. 3.
  2. The said lectureship shall be a full-time office within the meaning of the statutes of the College and of the University. The stipend of the lectureship shall be the same as that provided in Statute LXXIII., Chapter I., section 5(a)(i). The provisions of Statute LXVII., Chapter IV., as amended by Statute LXX., Chapter III., section 1, and by Statute LXXIII., Chapter IV., shall also apply to the office.
  3. The duties of the lecturer shall be to lecture in Electrical Engineering under the direction of the Professor of Electrical Engineering for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College. He shall also examine in Electrical Engineering for the College and, if required by the Senate to do so, for the University. He shall, in addition, discharge such other duties appropriate to the office as shall be assigned to him by the said Professor of Electrical Engineering.
  4. The said lectureship shall be a pensionable office and Table A of the Additional Pension Scheme annexed to Statute XXXIX., Chapter II., as already amended, is hereby further amended by the addition of the said office thereto.

CHAPTER VI.
Lectureship in Irish Language and Linguistics

  1. There shall be established in the College, in the event of its institution by the National University of Ireland, a Lectureship in Irish Language and Linguistics.
  2. The said lectureship shall be a full-time office within the meaning of the statutes of the College and of the University. The stipend of the lectureship shall be the same as that provided in Statute LXXIII., Chapter I., section 5(a)(i). The provisions of Statute LXVII., Chapter IV., as amended by Statute LXX., Chapter III., section 1, and by Statute LXXIII., Chapter IV., shall also apply to the office.
  3. The duties of the lecturer shall be to lecture in Irish Language and Linguistics and in Scottish Gaelic under the direction of the Professor of Irish Language and Literature for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College. He shall also examine in Irish Language and Linguistics and in Scottish Gaelic for the College and, if required by the Senate to do so, for the University. He shall, in addition, discharge such other duties appropriate to the office as shall be assigned to him by the said Professor of Irish Language and Literature.
  4. The said lectureship shall be a pensionable office and Table A of the Additional Pension Scheme annexed to Statute XXXIX., Chapter II., as already amended, is hereby further amended by the addition of the said office thereto.

CHAPTER VII.
Lectureship in Celtic Languages and Philology

  1. There shall be established in the College, in the event of its institution by the National University of Ireland, a Lectureship in Celtic Languages and Philology.
  2. The said lectureship shall be a full-time office within the meaning of the Statutes of the College and of the University. The stipend of the lectureship shall be the same as that provided in Statute LXXIII., Chapter I., section 5(a)(i). The provisions of Statute LXVII., Chapter IV., as amended by Statute LXX., Chapter III., section 1, and by Statute LXXIII., Chapter IV., shall also apply to the office.
  3. The duties of the lecturer shall be to lecture in Celtic Languages and Philology under the direction of the Professor of Celtic Languages and Philology for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College. He shall also examine in Celtic Languages and Philology for the College and, if required by the Senate to do so, for the University. He shall, in addition, discharge such other duties appropriate to the office as shall be assigned to him by the said Professor of Celtic Languages and Philology.
  4. The said lectureship shall be a pensionable office and Table A of the Additional Pension Scheme annexed to Statute XXXIX., Chapter II., as already amended, is hereby further amended by the addition of the said office thereto.

CHAPTER VIII.
Appointment of Professors and Lecturers

  1. Statute XXXIV., Chapter I., as already amended is hereby further amended as follows:-
  2. This amendment shall be deemed to have come into operation on 1 July, 1966.

CHAPTER IX.
Professorship of English
Part-time Lectureship in Electrical Engineering

  1. The Professorship of English established by Statute I., Chapter XVI., is hereby abolished.
  2. The Lectureship in Electrical Engineering established by Statute XXXVII., Chapter II., shall be deemed to be abolished when the present holder ceases by resignation or otherwise to hold office.

CHAPTER X.
Lectureship in Sociology

Statute LVII., Chapter II., as already amended, is hereby further amended by the deletion from section 2 of the following words:

" It is also expressly declared that the holder of the office shall act as Director of Studies under the direction of the Academic Council in relation to schemes of Adult Education within and without the College and he shall lecture and examine therein and visit the centres at which courses are being held as required to do so by the President and/or the Governing Body."

CHAPTER XI.
Faculties

Statute XXVII., Chapter II., as already amended, is hereby further amended by the substitution of the subjects Modern English and Old and Medieval English for the subject English in the Faculty of Arts.

CHAPTER XII.

The professorships and lectureships and established by this statute shall be tenable for the same term and upon the same conditions and the holders thereof shall be subject to the same duties and obligations as if the said professorships and lectureships had been included in Statutes I. to LXXIII. of University College, Cork.

CHAPTER XIII.

  1. This statute shall be construed with and as part of Statutes I. to LXXIII. of University College, Cork and may be cited as Statute LXXIV., of University College, Cork or Stat. LXXIV. of Univ. Coll. Cork.
  2. This Statute shall come into operation on the twenty-fourth day of January, 1967.
