Statute LXXIII.
Irish Universities Act, 1908
University College, Cork
We, the Governing Body of University College, Cork, under
and by virtue of the powers in that behalf conferred on us by
the said Act, Do by this present instrument under the Seal
of University College, Cork, make the Statute contained in
the Schedule hereof for the general government of the said
College.
Given under the Common Seal of University College, Cork, this thirteenth
day of December, 1966.

Statute LXXIII.
Schedule
Statutes I. to LXXII. of University College, Cork shall be read
and construed with the additions, modifications and amendments
hereinafter set forth.
CHAPTER I.
Increased Stipends
- Notwithstanding any provisions to the contrary contained
in Statutes I. to LXXII. of University College, Cork, the annual
stipends of the President, of the professorships and lectureships
set forth in this Chapter, and of the Officers of the College shall,
as from 1 April, 1966, be those hereinafter set forth.
- The annual stipend of the President shall be £5,520. He
shall also be entitled to residence, fuel and light valued for pension
purposes at £465 per annum. In addition, he shall receive a non-
pensionable allowance of £740 per annum in respect of the expenses
of his office.
- The annual stipend of the Registrar shall be £736. He shall
also be entitled to residence, fuel and light valued for pension
purposes at £465 per annum. The Governing Body may, at its
discretion, pay a cash allowance equivalent to the pensionable
value of this perquisite, and Statute XXXIX., Chapter II., as
already amended, is hereby further amended accordingly.
- (a)
- (b) The annual stipend of each of the full-time professorships
set out in this paragraph shall be £2,140 :
- Professorship of Medicine
- Professorship of Pathology (Statute LXXII.)
- (a)
- (i) The annual stipend of each of the full-time lectureships
set out in this sub-section shall be £1,960 increasing by annual
increments of £80 to £2,360. If recommended by the President
and approved by the Governing Body, the annual stipend shall
then proceed by further annual increments of £80 to a maximum
of £2,760.
Provided that in the case of the holders of lectureships who held
office on the date of enactment of Statute LXX., the annual stipend
shall be £1,960 increasing by annual increments of £30 to a maximum
of £2,760;

- (ii) The annual stipend of each of the full-time lectureships set
forth in this sub-section shall be £2,410 increasing by annual
increments of £80 to £2,810. If recommended by the President and
approved by the Governing Body the annual stipend shall then
proceed by further annual increments of £80 to a maximum of
£3,210:
- Lectureship in Conservative Dentistry
- Lectureship in Dental Surgery
- Lectureship in Social Medicine
- (b) The annual stipend of the full-time lectureship in Preventive
Dentistry shall be £1,205 increasing by annual increments of £40 to
£1,405. If recommended by the president and approved by the
Governing Body the annual stipend shall then proceed by further
annual increments of £40 to a maximum of £1,605.
- (c) The annual stipend of the full-time lectureship in Medicine
shall be £1,430 increasing by annual increments of £43. 15. 0d. to a
maximum of £1,605.
- (a) The annual stipend of the Secretary and Bursar shall be
the same as that provided in section 4(a) (ii) hereof.
- (b) The annual stipend of the Librarian shall be the same as
that provided in section 5(a) (i) hereof.
- The annual stipend of each of the following part-time
professorships shall be as set out hereunder.
- Professorship of Obstetrics - - - £1,150
- Professorship of Surgery - - - £1,150
- Professorship of Common Law, Real Property and Equity - - - £930
- Professorship of Jurisprudence, Roman Law and Personal Property - - - £930
- Professorship of Chemical Spectroscopy - - - £920

- The annual stipend of each of the following part-time
Lectureships shall be as set out hereunder.

- Statute LXVII.. Chapter I., section 2, is hereby amended by
the substitution of the figure "£200 " for the figure " £150 " where
it occurs in that section.
CHAPTER II.
Increased Stipends - Faculty of Dairy Science
- Notwithstanding any provisions to the contrary contained in Statutes I. to LXXII. of University College, Cork, the annual stipends of the professorships and lectureships set forth in this Chapter shall , as from 1 April, be these hereinafter set forth.
- (a) The annual stipend of the full-time Professorship of
Agriculture shall be the same as that provided in Chapter I., section
4(a)(i) of this Statute.
- (b) The annual stipend of each of the full-time professorships
set out hereunder shall be the same as that provided in Chapter I.,
section 4(a) (ii), of this Statute :
- Professorship of Dairy Accounting and Dairy Economics
- Professorship of Dairy Chemistry
- Professorship of Dairy Engineering
- Professorship of Dairy and Food Microbiology
- Professorship of Dairy Technology
- (a) The annual stipend of each of the full-time lectureships
set out hereunder shall be the same as that provided in Chapter I.,
section 5(a) (i), of this Statute .
- Lectureship in Agriculture
- Lectureship in Dairy Chemistry
- Lectureship in Dairy Economics
- Lectureship in Dairy Engineering
- Lectureship in Dairy and Food Microbiology

CHAPTER III.
Stipends of Readers
Where a full-time lecturer has received the title of Reader from
the Senate of the National University of Ireland in accordance
with the provisions of Statute LXXXVI., Chapter XXVI., of the
National University of Ireland, he shall be paid an additional
stipend of one-sixth of the maximum stipend applicable to the
lectureship he holds.
Provided always that the number of such additional stipends
shall not exceed one-fifth of the total number of full-time lectureships in the College, including those on the holders of which the
title of Reader has been conferred.
CHAPTER IV.
Children's Allowances
- (a) Statute LXVII., Chapter IV., section 2, as amended by
Statute LXX., Chapter III., section 1, is hereby further amended
by the substitution of the figure "£60" for the figure "£55"
where it occurs in the said Statute LXX., Chapter III., section 1.
- (b) The foregoing amendment shall be deemed to have been
operative as from 1 April, 1966.
CHAPTER V.
Increased Pensions
Notwithstanding any provisions to the contrary contained in
previous Statutes, the following increased annual pensions of
former holders of full-time statutory offices in the College shall be
deemed to have become operative as from 1 April, 1966:

CHAPTER VI.
Scheme for Payments to Widows
- Statute LXX., Chapter V., is hereby amended by the
substitution of the figure "£477 " for the figure "£450 " in section
1 (i).
- Notwithstanding the provision of Statute XLVII., Chapter
II., section 1, as amended, an increase of six per cent. in payments
at present being made to widows under the Scheme for Payments
to Widows is hereby authorised, such increased payment to be
rounded off to the nearest £1.
- The provisions of this Chapter shall be deemed to have been
operative as from 1 April, 1966.
CHAPTER VII.
Increments
- Statute LVIII., Chapter I. section 6, is hereby amended by
the substitution of the word "four " for the word "two" where it
occurs in that section.
- The foregoing amendment shall be deemed to have had effect
as from 1 April, 1966.
CHAPTER VIII.
Professorship of Surgery
- There shall be established in the College, in the event of its
institution by the National University of Ireland, a full-time
Professorship of Surgery. Notwithstanding the provisions of
previous Statutes, the holder of this full-time office shall not be
precluded from holding and receiving a stipend wholly in respect
of a full-time appointment of the kind specified in section 5 of this
Chapter. He shall, however, be precluded from engaging in private
practice or consultations in any form or retaining any fees which
may be received by him in connection with his work.
- The stipend of the professorship shall be £2,140 per annum.
The provisions of Statute LXVII., Chapter IV., as amended by
Statute LXX., Chapter III., section 1, and by Chapter IV., section
1(a), of this Statute, shall also apply to the office.
- The said professorship shall be a pensionable office and Table
A of the Additional Pension Scheme annexed to Statute XXXIX.,
Chapter II., as already amended, is hereby further amended by the
addition of the said office thereto. In calculating the pension of
this office the provisions of Statute XXXIX., Chapter II., section
6(b), in respect of seven added years shall not apply.
- The duties of the Professor shall be to lecture in Surgery for
all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all
diplomas and certificates of the College. He shall also examine
in Surgery for the College and, if required by the Senate to do so,
for the University.
- The said Professorship shall be tenable only by the holder
in a permanent capacity of an office of Surgeon to the Cork health
authority with duties in a hospital which is recognised by the College
and the University as a teaching hospital, and in which he shall
have as of right the control of an adequate teaching or professional
unit of beds, both male and female, and where he shall be the
surgeon in charge.
- When the Professorship of Surgery established by this
Chapter shall have been filled the Professorship of Surgery
established by Statute I., Chapter XII., thereupon be abolished.
- The said Professorship shall, subject to the foregoing, be
tenable for the same term and upon the same conditions and the
holder thereof shall be subject to the same duties and obligations
as if the said Professorship had been included in Statutes I. to
LXXII. of University College, Cork.
CHAPTER IX.
Professorship of Medicine
- (a) Statute LXIII., Chapter IV., section 5, is hereby amended
by the substitution of the reference " Chapter XIII." for the
reference " Chapter XVI." where it occurs in that section.
- (b) The foregoing amendment shall be deemed to have had
effect as from the date of coming into operation of said Statute
LXIII.
- Chapter VIII. of Statute LXIX. and section 2 of Chapter
III. of Statute LXX. are hereby revoked as from 31 March, 1966.
- (a) Statute LXIII., Chapter IV., section 2 is hereby amended
by the insertion of the following after the first sentence:
"The provisions of Statute LXVII., Chapter IV., as
amended by Statute LXX., Chapter III., section 1, and
by Chapter IV., section 1, of this Statute, shall also apply
to the office."
- (b) The foregoing amendment shall be deemed to have had
effect as from 1 April, 1966.
CHAPTER X.
Professorship of Pathology
- Statute LXXII., Chapter I., is hereby amended as
follows:
- (a) In section 2 by the insertion of the following after the
first sentence:
"The provisions of Statute LXVII., Chapter IV.,
as amended by Statute LXX., Chapter III., section
I, and by Chapter IV., section 1, of this Statute,
shall also apply to the office."
- (b) In section 5-by the substitution of the reference
"Chapter XIII." for the reference " Chapter XVI. "
where it occurs in that section.
- The foregoing amendments shall be deemed to have had
effect as from the date of coming into operation of said Statute
LXXII.
CHAPTER XI.
The Faculties (Deans)
Statute I., Chapter XI., section 8, is hereby amended by the
addition of the following paragraph:
" A dean elected to fill a casual vacancy shall hold office
only for the unexpired period of office of his predecessor."
- This Statute shall be construed with and as part of Statutes
I. to LXXII. of University College, Cork, and may be cited as Statute
LXXIII. of University College, Cork, or Stat. LXXIII. of Univ. Coll.
Cork.
- This Statute shall come into operation on the thirteenth
day of December, 1966.
Present when the Common Seal of University College, Cork,
was affixed.
