Statute LIX.
Irish Universities Act, 1908
University College, Cork
We, the Governing Body of University College, Cork, under
and by virtue of the powers in that behalf conferred on us by
the said Act, Do by this present instrument under the Seal
of University College, Cork, make the Statute contained in
the Schedule hereof for the general government of the said
College.
Given under the Common Seal of University College, Cork, this second day of April, 1957.

Statute LIX.
Schedule
Statutes I. to LVIII. of University College, Cork, shall be read and construed with the additions, modifications and amendments hereinafter set forth.
CHAPTER I.
Lectureship in Pharmacology
- There shall be established in the College, in the event of its
institution by the Senate of the National University of Ireland, a
Lectureship in Pharmacology.
- The said Lectureship shall be a full-time office within the
meaning of the Statutes of the College and of the University. The
stipend of the Lectureship shall be the same as those provided for in
Statute LVIII., Chapter I., Section 3(c). The provisions of Sections
5, 6 and 7 of Chapter 1. and of Chapter III. of that Statute shall also
apply to the office.
- The duties of the Lecturer shall be to lecture and examine in
Pharmacology for all Degrees, Diplomas and Certificates of the
College and of the University, under the direction of the Professor
of Physiology and to discharge such other duties in the Department
of Physiology as shall be assigned to him by the said Professor.
- The said Lectureship shall be a pensionable office, and Table
A of the Additional Pension Scheme annexed to Statute XXXIX.,
Chapter II., as already amended, is hereby further amended by the
addition of the said office thereto.
- Statute XXVII., Chapter XI., as already amended, is hereby
further amended by the addition to the Faculty of Medicine of the
subject Pharmacology.
CHAPTER II.
Lectureship in Materia Medica
The Lectureship in Materia Medica Established by Statute VI., Chapter I., Section 1., is hereby abolished.
CHAPTER III.
Lectureships in the Faculty of Medicine
- There shall be established in the College, in the event of their
institution by the Senate of the National University of Ireland, the
following Lectureships:
- (a) Three Lectureships in Medicine. One of these offices shall
be held by a recognised clinical teacher in Medicine at the
North Charitable Infirmary Cork; one by a recognised
clinical teacher in Medicine at the South Charitable
Infirmary, Cork; and one by a recognised clinical teacher
in Medicine at St. Finbarr's Hospital, Cork.
The holders of these Lectureships shall lecture and
examine in Medicine under the direction of the Professor
of Medicine.
- (b) Two Lectureships in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. One of
these offices shall be held by a recognised clinical teacher
in Obstetrics and gynaecology at Erinville Hospital,
Cork; and one by a recognised clinical teacher in Obstetrics
and Gynaecology at St. Finbarr's Hospital, Cork.
The holders of these Lectureships shall lecture and
examine in Obstetrics and Gynaecology under the
direction of the Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
- (c) Three Lectureships in Surgery. One of these offices shall be
held by a recognised clinical teacher in Surgery at the
North Charitable Infirmary Cork; one by a recognised
clinical teacher in Surgery at the South Charitable
Infirmary, Cork; and one by a recognised clinical teacher
in Surgery at St. Finbarr's Hospital, Cork.
The holders of these Lectureships shall lecture and
examine in Surgery under the direction of the Professor of
Surgery.
- (d) One Lectureship in Orthopaedic Surgery. This office shall
be held by a recognised clinical teacher in Orthopaedic
Surgery at St. Mary's Orthopaedic Hospital, Cork.
The holder of the Lectureship shall lecture and examine
in Orthopaedic Surgery under the direction of the Professor
of Surgery.
- The said Lectureships shall be part-time and non-pensionable
offices. The stipend of each Lectureship shall be £50 per annum.
- Notwithstanding the provisions of any other Statute, each
person appointed to any of the Lectureships established by this
Chapter shall, subject to good conduct and the due fulfilment of the
duties of the office, hold office for a term of three years from the date
of his appointment and may thereafter be continued in office for a
further term or terms of three years until he shall have attained the
age of sixty five years.
Provided such continuance in office is recommended to the
Senate by the Governing Body, with the approval of the President
and is sanctioned by the Senate triennially.
- The holders of the Lectureships established by this Statute who
shall have attained the age of sixty-five years may thereafter be
continued in office to the same extent and in the same manner and
subject to the same conditions as provided for the holders of other
statutory lectureships in the College.
CHAPTER IV.
Scheme of Payment to Widows
- Statute XLVII., Chapter II., is hereby amended as follows:
- (a) By the deletion from Section 1(a) of the words "Such
payment shall continue until the expiration of eight years
from the date of the death of the holder of such office";
- (b) By the deletion from Section 1(b) of the words "Such
payment shall continue until the expiration of three years
from the date of such person's death";
- (c) By the deletion from Section 1(c) of the words "for the
remainder of the periods stipulated in sub-section (a) or
(b) respectively of this section" and the substitution
therefor of the following words, namely: "in such proportions (if there be more than one dependent child) and for
such period or periods as the Governing Body shall, in its
absolute discretion decide".
- Statute LI., Chapter IX., is hereby amended by the deletion
of the words "the substitution of the word ‘twelve’ for the word ‘eight’
in Section 1(a), line 7, and"
- Statute LIII. is hereby amended by the deletion of Chapter II
therefrom.
- Each of the following persons shall henceforth pay into the
appropriate College Pension Fund the sums hereinafter set forth, and
such payments shall be due and payable together with, on the same
date, and in addition to the payments for which each of such persons
is or shall be liable as a condition of his participation in the scheme
for Payments to Widows referred to in Statute XLVII., Chapter II.,
as amended, namely:
- (a) In the case of the President,
full-time Professors and the
Secretary and Bursar - - - £5 per annum;
- (b) In the case of full-time
Lecturers, the Librarian
and the Assistant Secretary - - - £3 per annum;
- (c) In the case of full-time
Assistants, Clerical Officers
and Library Assistants
qualified for participation
in the Scheme - - - £1 per annum.
- The additional benefits effected by Sections 1, 2 and 3 of this
Chapter shall accrue to the widows and children of the former
Professor of Biochemistry in the College and of the former Librarian
of the College.
The Lectureships established by this Statute shall, subject to the
provisions of Chapter IV. in respect of the Lectureships established
by that Chapter, be tenable for the same term and upon the same
conditions, and the holders thereof shall be subject to the same
duties and obligations as if the said Lectureships had been included
in Statutes I. to LVIII. of University College, Cork.
- This Statute shall be construed with and as part of Statutes I.
to LVIII. of University College, Cork, and may be cited as Statute
LIX. of University College, Cork, or Stat. LIX. of Univ. Coll., Cork.
- This Statute shall come into operation on the second day of
April, 1957.
Present when the Common Seal of University College, Cork,
was affixed.
