Statute LVII.

Irish Universities Act, 1908

University College, Cork

We, the Governing Body of University College, Cork, under and by virtue of the powers in that behalf conferred on us by the said Act, Do by this present instrument under the Seal of University College, Cork, make the Statute contained in the Schedule hereof for the general government of the said College.

Given under the Common Seal of University College, Cork, this twentieth day of June, 1955.

Statute LVII.

Schedule

Statutes I. to LVI. of University College, Cork, shall be construed with the additions, modifications and amendments hereinafter set forth .

CHAPTER I.
Professorship of Theology

  1. Whereas the Catholic Archbishops and Bishops of Ireland have proposed to endow a Chair of Theology in the College and have undertaken to place at the disposal of the College an annual sum sufficient to pay the stipend thereof, there shall be in the College a Professorship of Theology, if and when such Professorship shall be instituted by Statute of the National University of Ireland and so long as the said annual sum is so placed at the disposal of the College.
  2. The said Professorship shall be tenable at the pleasure of the Catholic Bishop of Cork for the time being who shall have power from time to time and at all times by Instrument if, writing under his hand to remove the holder thereof.
  3. The annual stipend of the said Professorship shall be such sum as the Catholic Archbishops and Bishops of Ireland shall annually place at the disposal of the College. No obligation shall fall upon the College in respect of the said stipend and no monies shall in any case be payable out of the funds of the College towards the said stipend or the expenses of the said Professorship.
  4. The said Professorship shall not be deemed to be a full-time Professorship within the meaning of the statutes of University College, Cork. The duties of the Professor shall be to lecture and examine in Theology as may be required by the Governing Body.
  5. The said Professorship shall, subject to the conditions in this Statute provided, be tenable on the conditions, and the holder thereof shall be subject to the same duties and obligations as if the said professorship had been instituted by Chapter XIII. of Statute I. of University College, Cork, provided that the holder of the said Professorship shall be subject to the provisions contained in Statute LXXXVI. of the National University of Ireland, so far as they are applicable.

CHAPTER II.
Lectureship in Sociology

  1. The Lectureship in Sociology in the College established by Statute XX XIV., Chapter II., of University College, Cork, shall, as from the date of enactment of this Statute, be a full-time Lectureship, and the present holder of the said Lectureship shall be deemed to be a full-time Lecturer within the meaning of the Statutes of the College and of the University.
  2. This full-time Lectureship shall be tenable on the same terms and on the same conditions, and the holder shall be subject to the same duties and obligations as if the Lectureship had been included in Statutes I. to LVI. of University College, Cork. It is also expressly declared that the holder of the office shall act as Director of Studies under the direction of the Academic Council in relation to schemes of Adult Education within and without the College and he shall lecture and examine therein and visit the centres at which courses are being held as required to do so by the President and/or the Governing Body.

CHAPTER III.
Professorship of Statistics

Statute I., Chapter I., Section 3, is hereby amended by the deletion of the words "and (b) to lecture and examine in Mathematics of which Department the existing Professor of Mathematics is the Head."

CHAPTER IV.
Lectureship in Economics, No. 2

  1. There shall be established in the College in the event of its institution by the Senate of the National University of Ireland a Lectureship in Economics, No. 2, which shall include Agricultural Economics.
  2. The said Lectureship shall be a full-time office within the meaning of the Statutes of the College and of the University. The stipend of the Lectureship shall be the same as those provided for in Statute LI., Chapter I., Section 3 (c). The provisions of Statute LI., Chapter I., Sections 5 and 6 and of Chapter II., Section 1, as amended, shall also apply to the office.
  3. The duties of the Lecturer shall be to lecture and examine in Economics, including Agricultural Economics, for all Degrees, Diplomas and Certificates of the College and of the University, under the direction of the Professor of Economics and Commerce, and to discharge such other duties in the Department of Economics as shall be assigned to him by the said Professor.
  4. The said Lectureship shall be a pensionable office, and Table A of Statute XXXIX., Chapter III., as already amended, is hereby further amended by the addition of the said office thereto.
  5. In the event of the establishment of a Faculty of Agriculture in the College such proportion of the salary of this Lectureship as shall be determined from time to time by the Governing Body shall be chargeable to the funds of such Faculty.
  6. The said Lectureship shall be tenable for the same term and on the same conditions and the holder thereof shall be subject to the same duties and obligations as if the said office had been included in Statutes I. to LVI. of University College, Cork.

CHAPTER V.
The Faculties

Statute XXVII., Chapter II., as already amended, shall further amended by the addition of the subjects.

CHAPTER VI.
Non-Recurring Payments

Nothwithstanding the provisions of Statute LI., Chapters I., II., and VII., a temporary increase of five per cent. on the statutory salary paid to each full-time statutory office holder in respect of the year ended 30th June, 1955, is hereby authorised; and a temporary increase at the rate of £5 per qualified child per annum in respect of the year ended 30th June, 1955, is hereby authorised to every full-time statutory office holder in receipt of Children's Allowances.

CHAPTER VII.

  1. This Statute shall be construed with and as part of Statutes I. to LVI. of University College, Cork, and may be cited as Statute LVII. of University College, Cork, or Stat. LVII. of Univ. Coll., Cork.
  2. This Statute shall come into operation on the twentieth day of June, 1955.
