Statute XLVIII.

Irish Universities Act, 1908

University College, Cork

We, the Governing Body of University College, Cork, under and by virtue of the powers in that behalf conferred on us by the said Act, Do by this present instrument under the Seal of University College, Cork, make the Statute contained in the Schedule hereof for the general government of the said College.

Given under the Common Seal of University College, Cork, this seventeenth day of October, 1949.

Statute XLVIII.

Schedule

Statutes I. to XLVII. of University College, Cork, shall be read and construed with the additions, modifications and amendments hereinafter set forth.

CHAPTER I.
Lectureship in Mathematical Physics and Soil Mechanics.

  1. There shall be established in the College in the event of its institution by the Senate of the National University of Ireland a Lectureship in Mathematical Physics and Soil Mechanics.

  2. The said Lectureship shall be a full-time office within the meaning of the Statutes of the College and of the University. The maximum stipend of said Lectureship shall be £850 per annum, payable in accordance with the Statutes of the College.

  3. The duties of the Lecturer shall be to lecture and examine in Mathematical Physics under the direction of the Professor of Mathematical Physics, and to lecture, examine and carry out research in Soil Mechanics.

CHAPTER II.
Lectureship in Dental Surgery.

  1. There shall be established in the College in the event of its institution by the Senate of the National University of Ireland a Lectureship in Dental Surgery.

  2. The said Lectureship shall be a part-time non-pensionable office. The stipend of such Lectureship shall be £100 per annum.

  3. The said Lectureship shall be in substitution for the existing Professorship of Dental Surgery which is hereby abolished, and Section 2 of Chapter V. of Statute XLIII., is hereby revoked.

CHAPTER III.
Professorship of Dental Prosthetics.

  1. There shall be established in the College in the event of its institution by the Senate of the National University of Ireland a Professorship of Dental Prosthetics.

  2. The said Professorship shall be a part-time and non-pensionable office. The stipend of such Professorship shall be £100 per annum.

  3. The said Professorship shall be in substitution for the existing Lectureship in Dental Mechanics instituted by Statute VI., which Lectureship shall be abolished if the present holder is appointed to the Professorship hereby established or ceases by resignation or otherwise to hold office, and Statute VI., Chapter I., shall on the occurrence of either of such events be amended accordingly.

CHAPTER IV.
Professorship of the History of Modern Irish Literature.

  1. There shall be established in the College in the event of its institution by the Senate of the National University of Ireland a Professorship of the History of Modern Irish Literature.

  2. The said Professorship shall be a full-time office within the meaning of the Statutes of the College and of the University. The maximum stipend of the Professorship shall be £1,100 per annum payable in accordance with the Statutes of the College.

  3. The duties of the Professor shall be to lecture and examine in the History of Modern including Early Modern Irish Literature, and to lecture and examine in Special Courses in Oral Irish and to organise the development of spoken Irish in the College.

  4. The said Professorship shall be in substitution for the existing Lectureship in Irish instituted by Statute XXIV., Chapter V., which Lectureship shall be abolished if the present holder is appointed to the Professorship hereby established or ceases by resignation or otherwise to hold office, and Chapter V. of Statute XXIV. shall, on the occurrence of either of such events, be revoked.

CHAPTER V.

  1. The Professorships and Lectureships established by this Statute shall be tenable for the same term and upon the same conditions and the holders thereof shall, in addition to such duties and obligations as are set out in this Statute, also be subject to the same duties and obligations as if the said Professorships and Lectureships had been included in Statutes I. to XLVII. of University College, Cork.

  2. The full-time Professorship of the History of Modern Irish Literature and the full-time Lectureship in Mathematical Physics and Soil Mechanics shall be pensionable offices, and Table A. of the Additional Pension Scheme annexed to Statute XXXIX., Chapter II., is hereby amended by the addition of the said offices thereto.

CHAPTER VI.

Statute XXVII., Chapter II., as amended by Statute XXXVII., Chapter III., and Statute XLIII., Chapter VII., is hereby further amended as follows:

CHAPTER VII.

  1. Statute XXXV., Chapter II., Section 10 of the Additional Pension Scheme and Statute XXXIX., Chapter II., Section 10 of the Additional Pension Scheme shall be amended by the inclusion of the word "not" between the words "after" and "less" in the first lines of each of the said Sections, and this amendment shall be deemed to have had effect as on and from the dates of enactment of Statutes XXXV. and XXXIX. respectively.

  2. Statute XLIII. is hereby amended by the deletion of the numerals "XVI." from Chapter I., Section 1, Sub- section (b) and the substitution therefor of the numerals "XV," and this amendment shall be deemed to have had effect as on and from the date of enactment of Statute XLIII.

  3. The maximum stipend of the Professorship of Botany shall as from the first day of October, 1949, be £1,100 per annum and Statute XLVI., Chapter IV., Section 2 shall be amended accordingly.

  4. Notwithstanding anything contained in the Statutes, the Governing Body may at its discretion, as from 1 November, 1948, pay to the holders of the full-time Professorships, Lectureships and Offices as mentioned below the annual Bonus indicated on their Statutory Stipends, provided that the determination at any time of such Bonus shall rest in the discretion of the Governing Body.

CHAPTER VIII.

  1. This Statute shall be construed with and as part of Statutes I. to XLVII. of University College, Cork, and may be cited as Statute XLVIII. of University College, Cork, or Stat. XLVIII. of Univ. Coll. Cork.

  2. This Statute shall come into operation on the seventeenth day of October, 1949.
