Statute XLII.

Irish Universities Act, 1908

University College, Cork

We, the Governing Body of University College, Cork, under and by virtue of the powers in that behalf conferred on us by the said Act, Do by this present instrument under the Seal of University College, Cork, make the Statute contained in the Schedule hereof for the general government of the said College.

Given under the Common Seal of University College, Cork, this twentieth day of March, 1945.

Statute XLII.

Schedule

Statutes I. to XLI. of University College, Cork shall be read and construed with the additions, modifications and amendments hereinafter set forth.

CHAPTER I.
Lectureship in Geography and Geology.

  1. Section 1 of Chapter XIII. of Statute I. of University College, Cork, in so far as a Professorship of Geology and Geography was thereby created, is hereby revoked to the intent that the said Professorship shall cease to exist as from the first day of October, 1944.
  2. There shall be in the College (in the event of such Lectureship being instituted within the College by the Senate of the National University of Ireland) in addition to the Lectureships mentioned in Statutes I. to XLI. of University College, Cork, a Lectureship in Geography and Geology.

  3. The stipend of the said Lectureship shall be £550 per annum payable in accordance with the Statutes of the College. Such stipend shall be subject to the terms of Chapter II. of Statute XXXVI. of University College, Cork.
  4. The said Lectureship shall be deemed to be a full-time Lectureship within the meaning of the Statutes of the College and of the University, and shall be a pensionable office in accordance with the Statutes of the College and Pension Scheme made thereunder.
  5. The duties of the Lecturer shall be to lecture and examine in Geography and Geology, and, so far as may be required by the Academic Council, to do so through Irish.
  6. The said Lectureship shall be tenable for the same term and upon the same conditions and the holder thereof shall, as in this Statute is provided, be subject to the same duties and obligations as if the said Lectureship had been included in Statutes I. to XLI. of University College, Cork.

CHAPTER II.
Professorship of Celtic Languages and Philology.

  1. There shall be in the College (in the event of such Professorship being instituted within the College by the Senate of the National University of Ireland) in addition to the Professorships mentioned in Statutes I. to XLI. of University College, Cork, a Professorship of Celtic Languages and Philology.

  2. The stipend of the said Professorship shall be £800 per annum payable in accordance with the Statutes of the College. Such stipend shall be subject to the terms of Chapter II. of Statute XXXVI. of University College, Cork.
  3. The said Professorship shall be deemed to be a full-time Professorship within the meaning of the Statutes of the College and of the University and shall be a pensionable office in accordance with the Statutes of the College and Pension Scheme made thereunder.
  4. In addition to such duties and obligations as are set out in Statutes I. to XLI. of University College, Cork, the duties of the Professor shall be to lecture and examine in Early and Mediaeval Irish, Celtic Languages and Celtic Philology.
  5. The said Professorship shall be tenable for the same term and upon the same conditions and the holder thereof shall be subject to the same duties and obligations as if the said Professorship had been included in Statutes I. to XLI. of University College, Cork.

CHAPTER III.
Professorship of Irish Language and Literature.

  1. Chapter V. of Statute XXI. of University College, Cork, is hereby revoked in so far as it provided a stipend of £900 per annum for the Professorship of Irish Language and Literature. The stipend allocated to the said Professorship shall be £800 per annum, payable in accordance with the Statutes of the College. Such stipend shall be subject to the terms of Chapter II. of Statute XXXVI. of University College, Cork.
  2. In addition to such duties and obligations as are set out in Statutes I. to XLI. of University College, Cork, the duties of the Professor of Irish Language and Literature shall be to lecture and examine in Early Modern Irish, Modern Irish and Irish Literature.

CHAPTER IV.
Abolition of Lectureship in Celtic Languages
Lectureship in Irish and Lectureship in Modern Irish.

  1. Subject to the rights of the existing holder, Chapter I. of Statute XXXVII. of University College, Cork, in so far as a Lectureship in Celtic Languages was thereby created, is hereby amended to the intent that the said Lectureship shall cease to exist on the occurrence of the first vacancy therein.
  2. Subject to the rights of the existing holder, Chapter V. of Statute XXIV. of University College, Cork, in so far as a Lectureship in Irish was thereby created, is hereby amended to the intent that the said Lectureship shall cease to exist on the occurrence of the first vacancy therein.
  3. Subject to the rights of the existing holder, Chapter XIII. of Statute I. and Chapter III. of Statute XIX. of University College, Cork, in so far as a Lectureship in Modern Irish was thereby created, is hereby amended to the intent that the said Lectureship shall cease to exist on the occurrence of the first vacancy therein.

CHAPTER V.

  1. The provisions contained in Section 4 of Chapter VI. of Statute XXIV. of University College, Cork, are hereby revoked in so far as they apply to the Lectureship in Mathematics.
  2. The duties of the Lecturer in Mathematics shall be to lecture and examine in Mathematics under the direction of the Professor of Mathematics, and, so far as may be required by the Academic Council, to do so through Irish.

CHAPTER VI.
Lectureship in Economics.

  1. Chapter IV. of Statute XXXI. of University College, Cork, is hereby revoked in so far as it provides a stipend of £150 per annum for the Lectureship in Economics.
  2. The stipend allocated to the Lectureship in Economics shall, owing to increased duties, be £300 per annum as from the date of termination of the first seven years' period of office, namely, from the first day of October, 1943. Such stipend shall be payable in accordance with the Statutes of the College.

CHAPTER VII.

  1. This Statute shall be construed with and as part of Statutes I. to XLI. of University College, Cork, and may he cited as Statute XLII. of University College, Cork, or Stat. XLII. of Univ. Coll., Cork.
  2. This Statute shall come into operation on the twentieth day of March, 1945.
