Statute 176

Irish Universities Act, 1908

University College, Cork

We, the Governing Body of University College, Cork, under and by virtue of the powers in that behalf conferred on us by the said Act, Do by this present instrument under the Seal of University College, Cork, make the Statute contained in the Schedule hereof for the general government of the said College.

Given under the Common Seal of University College, Cork this Twenty-eighth day of January, 1997.

Statute 176

Schedule

Statutes 1 to 175 of University College, Cork shall be read and construed with the additions, modifications and amendments hereinafter set forth.

CHAPTER I.
Department of Food Science and Technology

  1. There shall be a Department of Food Science and Technology, which shall comprise the whole of the memberships of the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Food Chemistry, the Department of Food Technology and the Department of Nutrition which existed immediately prior to the coming into operation of this Statute, and any other Professorship, Lectureship, Assistantship or Demonstratorship which may be hereinafter established in said Department of Food Science and Technology.
  2. All references in these Statutes to the "Department of Agriculture", the "Department of Food Chemistry", the "Department of Food Technology" or the "Department of Nutrition" shall be deemed to be references to the "Department of Food Science and Technology."
  3. In addition to the members referred to in section 1, there shall be, subject to Regulations relating to the Department of Food Science and Technology, provision for membership by joint appointment of members who hold offices or appointments in other departments whose duties include teaching and/or research activities related to food.
  4. The provisions of this Chapter shall, subject to the provisions of Chapters II - XIII, come into effect as from a date to be determined by the Governing Body.

CHAPTER II.
Professorship of Food Science and Technogy

  1. There shall be established in the College, in the event of its institution by the National University of Ireland, a Professorship of Food Science and Technology.
  2. The said Professorship shall be in the Department of Food Science and Technology and the holder thereof shall be the Head of said Department. Subject to the provisions of this Chapter, the Professorship shall be a full-time office within the meaning of the Statutes of the College and of the University. The stipend of the said Professorship shall be the same as that provided in Statute 171, Chapter I., section 3(a).
  3. The duties of the Professor shall be to lecture in Food Science and Technology for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College. He/She shall also examine in Food Science and Technology for the College and, if required by the Senate to do so, for the University. The Professor shall carry out the duties as Head of Department in accordance with Regulations relating to the Department of Food Science and Technology.
  4. The said Professorship shall, subject to the provisions of this Chapter and of Chapter XIII of this Statute, be a pensionable office to which the provisions of Statute 79, as amended, and the Pension Scheme annexed thereto, as amended, shall apply.
  5. The holder of said Professorship shall, notwithstanding anything to the contrary contained in these Statutes and subject to good conduct and the due fulfilment of his/her duties, hold office for a period of five years or for the period until he/she shall have attained the age of sixty-five years, whichever period shall first expire. In the event of the holder of the Professorship being less than sixty years of age at the expiration of the five-year period, the provisions of the Pension Scheme referred to in section 4 relating to transferability of pensions or to the preservation of pensions, as determined by the Governing Body, shall apply.
  6. Subject to the provisions of this Chapter, the said Professorship shall be tenable upon the same conditions and the holder thereof shall be subject to the same duties and obligations as if the said Professorship had been included in Statute 1 to 175 of University College, Cork.

CHAPTER III.
Professorship of Agriculture

  1. With the consent of the present holder of the Professorship of Agriculture, established by Statute 20, Chapter I., as amended, the provisions of this Chapter shall apply.
  2. The said Professorship shall be in the Department of Food Science and Technology.
  3. The duties of the said Professor shall be to lecture in Agriculture, under the general direction of the Head of the Department of Food Science and Technology, for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College. The Professor shall also examine in Agriculture for the College and, if required by the Senate to do so, for the University. He/She shall, in addition, discharge such other duties appropriate to this office as shall be assigned to him/her by the Head of the Department of Food Science and Technology.

CHAPTER IV.
Professorship of Food Chemistry

  1. With the consent of the present holder of the Professorship of Food Chemistry, established by Statute 80, Chapter XXIV., as amended, the provisions of this Chapter shall apply.
  2. The said Professorship shall be in the Department of Food Science and Technology.
  3. The duties of the said Professor shall be to lecture in Food Chemistry, under the general direction of the Head of the Department of Food Science and Technology, for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College. The Professor shall also examine in Food Chemistry for the College and, if required by the Senate to do so, for the University. He/She shall, in addition, discharge such other duties appropriate to this office as shall be assigned to him/her by the Head of the Department of Food Science and Technology.
  4. Statute 80, Chapter XXIV., section 3, is hereby deleted.

CHAPTER V.
Professorship of Food Technology

  1. The provisions of this Chapter shall apply to the Professorship of Food Technology, established by Statute 80, Chapter XXV., as amended.
  2. The said Professorship shall be in the Department of Food Science and Technology.
  3. The duties of the said Professor shall be to lecture in Food Technology, under the general direction of the Head of the Department of Food Science and Technology, for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College. The Professor shall also examine in Food Technology for the College and, if required by the Senate to do so, for the University. He/She shall, in addition, discharge such other duties appropriate to this office as shall be assigned to him/her by the Head of the Department of Food Science and Technology.
  4. Statute 80, Chapter XXV., section 3, is hereby deleted.

CHAPTER VI
Professorship of Nutrition

  1. With the consent of the present holder of the Professorship of Nutrition, established by Statute 103, Chapter I., the provisions of this Chapter shall apply.
  2. The said Professorship shall be in the Department of Food Science and Technology.
  3. The duties of the said Professor shall be to lecture in Nutrition, under the general direction of the Head of the Department of Food Science and Technology, for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College. The Professor shall also examine in Nutrition for the College and, if required by the Senate to do so, for the University. He/She shall, in addition, discharge such other duties appropriate to this office as shall be assigned to him/her by the Head of the Department of Food Science and Technology.
  4. Statute 103, Chapter I., section 3, is hereby deleted.

CHAPTER VII
Lectureship in Agriculture

  1. The provisions of this Chapter shall apply to the Lectureship in Agriculture, established by Statute 66, Chapter II.
  2. The said Lectureship shall be in the Department of Food Science and Technology.
  3. The duties of the said Lecturer shall be to lecture in Agriculture, under the direction of the Head of the Department of Food Science and Technology, for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College. The Lecturer shall also examine in Agriculture for the College and, if required by the Senate to do so, for the University. He/She shall, in addition, discharge such other duties appropriate to this office as shall be assigned to him/her by the Head of the Department of Food Science and Technology.
  4. Statute 66, Chapter II., section 3, is hereby deleted.

CHAPTER VIII
Lectureship in Food Chemistry

  1. The provisions of this Chapter shall apply to the Lectureship in Food Chemistry, established by Statute 80, Chapter XXVI., as amended.
  2. The said Lectureship shall be in the Department of Food Science and Technology.
  3. The duties of the said Lecturer shall be to lecture in Food Chemistry, under the direction of the Head of the Department of Food Science and Technology, for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College. The Lecturer shall also examine in Food Chemistry for the College and, if required by the Senate to do so, for the University. He/She shall, in addition, discharge such other duties appropriate to this office as shall be assigned to him/her by the Head of the Department of Food Science and Technology.
  4. Statute 80, Chapter XXVI., section 3, is hereby deleted.

CHAPTER IX
Lectureship in Food Technology

  1. The provisions of this Chapter shall apply to the Lectureship in Food Technology, established by Statute 66, Chapter VI., as amended.
  2. The said Lectureship shall be in the Department of Food Science and Technology.
  3. The duties of the said Lecturer shall be to lecture in Food Technology, under the direction of the Head of the Department of Food Science and Technology, for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College. The Lecturer shall also examine in Food Technology for the College and, if required by the Senate to do so, for the University. He/She shall, in addition, discharge such other duties appropriate to this office as shall be assigned to him/her by the Head of the Department of Food Science and Technology.
  4. Statute 66, Chapter VI., section 3, is hereby deleted.

CHAPTER X
Lectureship in Food Technology No. 2

  1. With the consent of the present holder of the Lectureship in Food Technology No. 2, established by Statute 66, Chapter VII., as amended, the provisions of this Chapter shall apply.
  2. The said Lectureship shall be in the Department of Food Science and Technology.
  3. The duties of the said Lecturer shall be to lecture in Food Technology, under the direction of the Head of the Department of Food Science and Technology, for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College. The Lecturer shall also examine in Food Technology for the College and, if required by the Senate to do so, for the University. He/She shall, in addition, discharge such other duties appropriate to this office as shall be assigned to him/her by the Head of the Department of Food Science and Technology.
  4. Statute 66, Chapter VII., section 3, is hereby deleted.

CHAPTER XI
Associate Professorships

  1. With the consent of the present holders, the provisions of this Chapter shall apply to Associate Professorships established by Statute 122, Chapter I., as amended, which are assigned by the Governing Body to the Department of Food Science and Technology, established by Chapter I of this Statute.
  2. The duties of the holder of each of the said Associate Professorships shall be to lecture, in the subject assigned by the Governing Body, under the direction of the Head of the Department of Food Science and Technology, for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College. The said Associate Professor shall also examine in the subject assigned for the College and, if required to do so, for the University. He/She shall, in addition, discharge such other duties appropriate to the office as shall be assigned to him/her by the Head of the Department of Food Science and Technology.

CHAPTER XII
Lectureships

  1. With the consent of the present holders, the provisions of this Chapter shall apply to Lectureships established by Statute 125, Chapter II., as amended, which are assigned by the Governing Body to the Department of Food Science and Technology, established by Chapter I of this Statute.
  2. The duties of the holder of each of the said Lectureships shall be to lecture, in the subject assigned by the Governing Body, under the direction of the Head of the Department of Food Science and Technology, for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College. The said Lecturer shall also examine in the subject assigned for the College and, if required to do so, for the University. He/She shall, in addition, discharge such other duties appropriate to the office as shall be assigned to him/her by the Head of the Department of Food Science and Technology.

CHAPTER XIII
Pension Funds

Statute 79, Chapter I., section 7(a) ii. is hereby amended by the addition thereto of the following: "provided that the Professor of Food Science and Technology shall, subject to good conduct and the due fulfilment of his/her duties, hold office for a period of five years or for the period until he/she shall have attained the age of sixty-five years, whichever period shall first expire"

CHAPTER XIV

  1. This Statute shall be construed with and as part of Statutes 1 to 175 of University College, Cork and may be cited as Statute 176 of University College, Cork or Stat. 176 of Univ. Coll. Cork.
  2. This Statute will come into operation on the Twenty-eighth day of January, 1997.
