Statute 165.

Irish Universities Act, 1908

University College, Cork

We, the Governing Body of University College, Cork, under and by virtue of the powers in that behalf conferred on us by the said Act, Do by this present instrument under the Seal of University College, Cork, make the Statute contained in the Schedule hereof for the general government of the said College.

Given under the Common Seal of University College, Cork, this fifth day of July, 1993.

Statute 165.

Schedule

Statutes 1 to 164 of University College, Cork shall be read and construed with the additions, modifications and amendments hereinafter set forth.

CHAPTER I.

  1. There shall be a Department of History which shall comprise the whole of the memberships of the Department of Irish History, the Department of Medieval History and the Department of Modern History which existed immediately prior to the coming into force of this Statute and any other Professorship, Lectureship, Assistantship and Demonstratorship which may be hereinafter established in said Department of History.
  2. All references heretofore in these Statutes to the "Department of Irish History", the "Department of Medieval History" or the "Department of Modern History", shall henceforth be deemed to be references to the "Department of History".
  3. In relation to the making of any permanent teaching appointment in the subject History in the Department of History, the Governing Body shall -
    1. as regards the making of any representations to the University or the selection of any candidates from amongst whom the University makes an appointment as Professor or Lecturer

      and

    2. (2) as regards the making of an appointment as Assistant

      take cognizance of the need to ensure a balanced degree programme in History which recognises existing strengths and respects all strands of the discipline, with particular reference to Irish History, Medieval History and Modern History.

CHAPTER II.
Professorship of History

  1. With the consent of the present holder of the Professorship of Modern History, established by Statute 69, Chapter VII., the said Professorship shall henceforth be subject to the provisions of this Chapter.
  2. The Professorship of Modern History shall henceforth be known as the "Professorship of History".
  3. Statute 69, Chapter VII., Section 3, shall be replaced by the following:

CHAPTER III.
Professorship of History No. 2

  1. There shall be established in the College, in the event of its institution by the National University of Ireland, a Professorship of History No. 2.
  2. The said Professorship shall be in the Department of History and shall be a full-time office within the meaning of the Statutes of the College and of the University. The stipend of the said Professorship shall be the same as that provided in Statute 132, Chapter I., Section 4(a), as amended.
  3. The duties of the Professor shall be to lecture in History, under the general direction of the Head of the Department of History, for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College. The Professor shall also examine in History for the College and, if required by the Senate to do so, for the University.
  4. The said Professorship shall be a pensionable office to which the provisions of Statute 79, as amended, and the Pension Scheme annexed thereto, as amended, shall apply.

CHAPTER IV.
Professorship of History No. 3

  1. There shall be established in the College, in the event of its institution by the National University of Ireland, a Professorship of History No. 3.
  2. The said Professorship shall be in the Department of History and shall be a full-time office within the meaning of the Statutes of the College and of the University. The stipend of the said Professorship shall be the same as that provided in Statute 132, Chapter I., Section 4(a), as amended.
  3. The duties of the Professor shall be to lecture in History, under the general direction of the Head of the Department of History, for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College. The Professor shall also examine in History for the College and, if required by the Senate to do so, for the University.
  4. The said Professorship shall be a pensionable office to which the provisions of Statute 79, as amended, and the Pension Scheme annexed thereto, as amended, shall apply.

CHAPTER V.
Professorship of Irish History
Professorship of Medieval History

  1. The Professorship of Irish History, established by Statute 56, Chapter I., is hereby abolished.
  2. The Professorship of Medieval History, established by Statute 70., Chapter VI., is hereby abolished.

CHAPTER VI.
Lectureship in History

  1. With the consent of the present holder of the Lectureship in Modern History No. 2, established by Statute 80, Chapter XVI., the said Lectureship shall henceforth be subject to the provisions of this Chapter.
  2. The Lectureship in Modern History No. 2 shall henceforth be known as the "Lectureship in History".
  3. Statute 80. Chapter XVI., Section 3, shall be replaced by the following:

    "3. The duties of the Lecturer shall be to lecture in History, including Economic and Social History, under the direction of the Head of the Department of History, for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College. The Lecturer shall also examine in History, including Economic and Social History, for the College and, if required by the Senate to do so, for the University. He/she shall, in addition, discharge such other duties appropriate to the office as shall be assigned to him/her by the Head of the Department of History".

CHAPTER VII.
Lectureship in History No. 2

  1. There shall be established in the College, in the event of its institution by the National University of Ireland, a Lectureship in History No. 2.
  2. The said Lectureship shall be in the Department of History and shall be a full-time office within the meaning of the Statutes of the College and of the University. The stipend of the said Lectureship shall be the same as that provided in Statute 132, Chapter I., Section 7(a), as amended.
  3. The duties of the Lecturer shall be to lecture in History, under the direction of the Head of the Department of History, for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College. The Lecturer shall also examine in History for the College and, if required by the Senate to do so, for the University. He/she shall, in addition, discharge such other duties appropriate to the office as shall be assigned to him/her by the Head of the Department of History.
  4. The said Lectureship shall be a pensionable office to which the provisions of Statute 79, as amended, and the Pension Scheme annexed thereto, as amended, shall apply.

CHAPTER VIII.
Lectureship in History No. 3

  1. There shall be established in the College, in the event of its institution by the National University of Ireland, a Lectureship in History No. 3.
  2. The said Lectureship shall be in the Department of History and shall be a full-time office within the meaning of the Statutes of the College and of the University. The stipend of the said Lectureship shall be the same as that provided in Statute 132, Chapter I., Section 7(a), as amended.
  3. The duties of the Lecturer shall be to lecture in History, under the direction of the Head of the Department of History, for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College. The Lecturer shall also examine in History for the College and, if required by the Senate to do so, for the University. He/she shall, in addition discharge such other duties appropriate to the office as shall be assigned to him/her by the Head of the Department of History.
  4. The said Lectureship shall be a pensionable office to which the provisions of Statute 79, as amended, and the Pension Scheme annexed thereto, as amended, shall apply.

CHAPTER IX.
Lectureship in Irish History
Lectureship in Modern History

  1. The Lectureship in Irish History, established by Statute 75. Chapter II., is hereby abolished.
  2. The Lectureship in Modern History, established by Statute 65., Chapter IV., is hereby abolished.

CHAPTER X.
Professorship of Education

  1. There shall be established in the College, in the event of its institution by the National University of Ireland, a Professorship of Education.
  2. The said Professorship shall be a full-time office within the meaning of the Statutes of the College and of the University. The stipend of the said Professorship shall be the same as that provided in Statute 132, Chapter I., Section 4(a), as amended.
  3. The said Professor shall, on initial appointment, be Head of the Department of Education for a period of at least five years. In the event of the Governing Body determining, by the making of a Statute or Regulation or otherwise, that new arrangements shall apply to the appointment of the Head of the Department of Education, the holder of the said Professorship shall thenceforth have the obligation of acting as Head of the Department of Education for such a period or periods as the Governing Body may decide.
  4. The duties of the Professor shall be to lecture in Education for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College. In the event of a revised arrangement in regard to the appointment of a Head of Department referred to in Section 3 applying, the Professor shall carry out the duties under the general direction of the Head of the Department of Education. The Professor shall also examine in Education for the College and, if required by the Senate to do so, for the University.
  5. The said Professorship shall be a pensionable office to which the provisions of Statute 79, as amended, and the Pension Scheme annexed thereto, as amended shall apply.
  6. The said Professorship shall be in substitution for the Professorship of Education established by Statute 31, Chapter III., which Professorship is hereby abolished.

CHAPTER XI.
Lectureship in Electrical Engineering, No. 2

Statute 63. Chapter III., Section 3, shall be replaced by the following:

  1. "3. The duties of the Lecturer shall be to lecture in Electrical Engineering under the direction of the Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Microelectronics, for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College. The said Lecturer shall also examine in Electrical Engineering for the College and, if required by the Senate to do so, for the University. He/she shall, in addition, discharge such other duties appropriate to the office as shall be assigned to him/her by the said Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Microelectronics".

CHAPTER XII.

  1. This Statute shall be construed with and as part of Statutes 1 to 164 of University College, Cork and may be cited as Statute 165 of University College, Cork or Stat. 165 of Univ. Coll. Cork.
  2. This Statute will come into operation on the fifth day of July, 1993.
