Numbas presentation and launch

  • 24 Oct 2016

Congratulations to The Numbas Project Team (Julie Crowley, Áine Ní Shé, Vivienne Terhorst, Deirdre Casey, Kieran Mulchrone, Tom Carroll) who had a very successful presentation and launch on Thursday 20th October 2016.

Several staff members of the UCC School of Mathematical Sciences attended as well as Prof. John O’Halloran Vice President of Teaching and Learning UCC and Dr Barry O’Connor, Registrar & Vice President for Academic Affairs CIT.

During the launch, Tom thanked all those who had contributed to the project and had worked so hard to make the project a success, in particular Teresa Buckley, Michelle Glynn, Clodagh McAllen and Siobhan Twomey in the School Office, the lecturer for MA1001 Martin Quirke, Joe Scanlon for Systems Administration, John O'Halloran and Mary O'Rourke of the Office of the Vice-President for Teaching and Learning

During 2015 and 2016, UCC and CIT have been running a project centred around the introduction of e-assessment in a range of large first year service courses. At UCC, this has centred on MA1001 Calculus for Science Part 1, which has close to 500 students. The goals of the project, which is funded by the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education, are to improve student engagement and outcomes, and to make more efficient use of lecturers' time by reducing the amount of repetitive marking of assignments and tests. We chose Numbas www.numbas.org.uk as the platform to implement e-assessment. Numbas was conceived and created at Newcastle University and is actively maintained there by a team currently led by Chris Graham and Christian Perfect.

As part of the work of the project, we have set up a website with many useful resources www.teame.ie. These include an Implementation Guide that is designed as a step-by-step guide to assist others to integrate Numbas in their courses should they so wish. With the aim of disseminating the project work more widely within UCC and CIT, we hosted a Numbas Presentation and Implementation Guide Launch on Thursday 20th October 2016.
